Another thing I learned from my visit to the old place is that “Grok, please explain to this guy why he’s wrong and I’m right” is now considered an acceptable clapback.

A visit to the old site in the wake of this past weekend's rallies shows that an old mythical narrative is still strong in conservative circles: that America had largely achieved racial equality and peace until Obama came along and "divided us."

I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

That beat of Trump trying to keep her at the lectern before she gently but firmly disengages feels like the kind of thing they’ll be putting in documentaries one day.

Trump calls Cindy Hyde-Smith on stage. She speaks for literally two seconds.

The election hasn’t happened yet, I’m taking nothing for granted, but there’s a very strong chance that it’s about to become so blazingly obvious that Trump is toxic to the Republican brand that it will become impossible to ignore, but at the same time these people need that locked-in culty 30%…

…so there’s gonna be more and more versions of this gruelingly awkward two-step where Republican office-holders are all “Trump: isn’t he great???” and then running for the hills hoping nobody normal noticed.

This is legit wild. One of the Trumpiest GOP kooks we’ve had holding high office here in Texas makes an absolute spot-on, beautiful, non-partisan call for government transparency against the governor’s attempt to hide his emails with Elon Musk.

I am old enough to remember when politicians felt the need to hide behind euphemism and obfuscation. As frustrating as these obfuscations were I hope it is becoming clear to all that they were an advance, historically speaking

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Fiction podcast people, we need to go to war for this show. Not just 'cause it's Paul and it'll be awesome, but we need a hit adaptation of a fiction podcast. We need to become the cool place the best ideas come from again.

Look, I'm an evolutionary physiologist, ok? I believe in biology, not this sentimental feminist claptrap. Women are biologically optimized to be nurturers. They run households, they don't fight lions. That's why they're the only ones we can trust to govern our complex, industrialized civilization.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

These people have a particular bizarre rage at Obama for not quietly turning over the country to Mitt Romney after he had his one term. They see his temerity to *vigorously campaign for re-election* as the original sin that birthed the modern era.

The problem with lot of Democratic eminences 2015-2024 is that they told themselves “I have a holistic perspective that allows me to resist the short-term demands of the crowd” but instead they’re simply moving lockstep with a DIFFERENT crowd, of Reasonable Adults in the Room.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I know Na hopes to make a sequel that expands the lore, but I’m honestly happy to leave it at “chaotic workaday (though surprisingly brave) morons haplessly collide with some grand galactic court intrigue about which we learn nothing,” I thought that was hilarious.

Any media that goes along with “Obama is elitist for making a Cheesecake Factory joke” while ignoring this explicit, absurdly on-the-nose actual elitism telling you who they are.

🇺🇸🤔 Trump: I can see the fake headlines: "Trump is talking about all the money they're making while people are suffering." That will be the headline. I don't give a damn. We're making a fortune.

We watched PROJECT HAIL MARY last night and I thought it was a delight. I don’t expect big studios to make great uncompromising masterpieces anymore, but there’s no reason they can’t make sharp fun entertainment like this more often, right?

Team El-Sayed should just straight-up release this clip as an ad with no alteration.

WELKER: Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda? MIKE ROGERS: Um, I'm apologizing. I'm having some difficultly in my earpiece. But is a vote for you? I'm not sure. I'll tell you what a vote for me is. It's a great day for the state of Michigan

An important key to 2028 will be to get as much footage as possible of elected Republicans pretzeling themselves beyond all recognition as they try to navigate between Trump’s plummeting popularity and the indispensable (to them) base that will love him no matter what and expect them to do the same.

Imagine being a wavering moderate Republican or right-leaning independent watching this speech, ready to accept anything Trump might say to reassure them so they don’t have to vote for a Democrat, and hearing this shit instead.

Here's a supercut of notable moments from Trump's rally tonight in Georgia, including a lot of gutter racism, blasphemy, and reveling in the suffering of Americans who are struggling with high prices:

Honestly people are treating today like it’s the second coming of Trump Got Covid and I just straight-up did not know these people EXISTED before 9am eastern this morning.

Add Hila and Ethan Klein to the remarkably long list of “people who were apparently world-famous for years before I ever so much as heard their names.”

I’m sorry to keep rambling about this entirely unimportant subject but my various TLs have been suffused with clips from this show in the last day and… this was a big popular thing? They made a living from this? It’s just bland people talking!

Chat podcasts are not my cup of tea, but when I occasionally listen to one of the big ones, I understand why it’s popular: the hosts have charisma & a fun dynamic & maybe interesting guests. The clips from this thing have none of that, but it’s being treated like an Event that it’s apparently over.

I was watching some clips of that Yglesias interview with Medhi Hasan, and it's funny how even as my personal political evolution toward electoralism ought to make me like him better, I find him remarkably even more repulsive on camera than on social media.

“You can just start your own studio!” Brother I do not WANT to own a business. I don’t want to be anybody’s boss. I want to write, which is the thing i’m good at!!!

I was watching some clips of that Yglesias interview with Medhi Hasan, and it's funny how even as my personal political evolution toward electoralism ought to make me like him better, I find him remarkably even more repulsive on camera than on social media.

The problem w/ Ygleisias's argument is that in order to accrue the political will to change policy or pass significant legislation, you have to have previously (and forcefully) introduced into public conversation the idea that a thing is deeply wrong and must be addressed. bsky.app/profile/jake...

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Changing anything in politics is a guessing uphill battle. Complacency creates its own inertia. For a hypothetical future Democratic majority to have the momentum to tackle ICE, they need a wave of fury at ICE's abuses to get that momentum going.
