Always wondered what the Gaia hypothesis is about but never really had time to look into that? Check out this article @tellusjournal.bsky.social ⤵️

Tellus@tellusjournal.bsky.social

A new article in the Tellus Special Collection revisits a landmark contribution to Earth system science: the Gaia hypothesis. Lenton & Dutreuil explore Gaia’s legacy, its relationship to Earth system science, and questions of life, habitability, and global change. tellusjournal.org/en/articles/...

📢 new #PhD position @luke.fi (apply by 09/23): few soil carbon models have foundations as solid and elegant as the Q model, and as underused; this #PhD puts that theoretical capital to work on EU-scale forest data with data-intensive Bayesian assimilation valtiolle.fi/en/jobs/rese...

Our Editorial Board gathered at #EGU26! Proof that behind every careful review, thoughtful decision, and late-night manuscript discussion, there are actual smiling humans (yes, really 😄). We are for scientists, by scientists — and occasionally with coffee, laughter, and a group photo to prove it.

Best way to start your #EGU26 week? Monday 8:30 ➡️ BG1.11 “Functional diversity in motion” chaired by @elsa-abs.bsky.social, @bopplaurent.bsky.social @lisawingate.bsky.social, @manzonilab.bsky.social

📌 Mark your calendar! #EGU26 BG1.11 “Functional diversity in motion” 🗓 Oral: Mon 8:30–12:00 (1.85/86) | Poster: Mon 16:15–18:00 (X1) Eco-evo dynamics of functional diversity across systems shaping biogeochemistry. 🎤 Jaideep Joshi, Tina Santl-Temkiv, Boris Sauterey

Since last year, Ilona Riipinen and I @stockholm-uni.bsky.social @bolincentre.bsky.social have been working with an amazing team of senior editors to re-launch the journal Tellus @tellusjournal.bsky.social. We are making it our dream journal to publish fundamental science on any of the 🌍 spheres.

Tellus@tellusjournal.bsky.social

The first publication from the relaunched Tellus journal is now available! This editorial outlines the journal’s scope and direction as a platform for interdisciplinary Earth system science, with a focus on scientific quality, openness, and community-oriented publishing. ⬇️

Publishing in Tellus is also an ethical choice--not for profit, diamond open access, independent of big publishers. Have a look at our editorial and be inspired--we are waiting for your best research 😀

Happy to post the news that @erikschwarz.bsky.social has successfully defended his PhD thesis “Microbial ecology in soil carbon models". Opponent: Sergey Blagodatsky; evaluators: Nadja Ray, Katharina Meurer, Jan Bengtsson. Congratulations Dr. Schwarz! 🎉🎊 (photo by Abigail Robinson)

In his thesis, Erik studied how eco-evolutionary processes can be included in soil carbon cycling models, and how microbial interactions modulate such processes. For a synthesis of current approaches including theory and pedagogic examples: doi.org/10.1111/ele....

Main conclusion: "Our analysis shows no trade-off between functionally rich rotations and food production or agricultural land expansion." Study led by Giulia Vico and her team at SLU, using >34,500 yield observations from 16 long-term experiments across Europe

If your research questions long-standing paradigms in Earth Science, there are a few days left to submit an abstract to our #EGU26 session www.egu26.eu/session/57516 (conveners: Ilona Riipinen, Claire Ansberque, @elsa-abs.bsky.social, @manzonilab.bsky.social)

Efficiencies are sometimes tricky to interpret. Here we show how the observed increase in efficiency of water use (iWUE) by trees does not necessarily translate into higher tree growth--drier air or drier soil limit growth despite high iWUE. Thanks Quan Zhang for leading this project!

Pieter Zuidema@pieterzuidema.bsky.social

Extra CO2 stimulates #photosynthesis of trees and reduces water losses through transpiration. But does that stimulate growth of #tree stems? Our paper today in NatClimateChange led by Quan Zhang uses theory & data to show that strong growth stimulation is unlikely.🌎🌐🍁 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
