Just an ordinary middle-aged English born Scot with an interest in politics, trying to make sense of a world that doesn't. Any opinions expressed are my own, and I try to be balanced and thoughtful, though I occasionally have been known to falter.

Reform seems utterly incapable of ever doing or saying anything positive. Tone deaf and just black holes sucking the life out of everything around them. Sadly their supporters seem just as miserable. Reform is home for the terminally unhappy and emotionally devoid.

Make America Great Again: Greatest democracy in the world? Nope. World's Strongest leader? Nope. Land of the free? Nope. Home of the brave? Nope Leader of the free world? Nope Beacon of hope to repressed nations? Nope. Costs down? Nope Epstein files? Nope Most billionaires? Oh, yes, yes, yes!

He also adds “there is no democracy in the world that has only two parties except America”. The US has baked-in political weakness; the Constitution recognises it, but the safeguards it contains are all based on trust. That trust no longer exists. All it has left is the game, and ‘winning’.

I'm allowed to share a little of the Field Guide from @russincheshire.bsky.social forthcoming book "The Wolf That Chews Rocks" "The Cairn Terrier A handful of dry thatch powered by sheer obstinacy... small in a way a grenade is small." When the book comes out, just buy it. It's so, so good.

A review will follow, but just finished @russincheshire.bsky.social The Wolf that Chews Rocks. I was delighted to get a copy, but the delight in reading it? Immense. If you ❤️ dogs, you'll love it. If you don't ❤️ dogs, it will help. I have a better understanding of my own bozo, and how he rules me.

I didn’t really follow the Arday story closely (I’m still a bit baffled why it was one) but this post captures all that is wrong with western media culture, particularly the right leaning variety. All for what, exactly? A lynching? Desperately frustrating, painfully sad. bsky.app/profile/pete...

I’ve had some media attacks in the past, and thank goodness I’ve managed to contain suicidal thoughts since my late 30s. But this - including Novara, Guardian and Channel 4 News by the end — would have probably finished me off

Delighted to be a lucky person to receive a copy of The Wolf that Chews Rocks by @russincheshire.bsky.social The dedication makes you smile, the chapter titles make you laugh, and as a dog lover, "Snoozing into the Wind" carries an emotional weight four words have no right to hold. ❤️ it already.

It's the caption to the photo at the top of this story deliberately misleading, even if factually accurate? "Spanish police officers...escort .. migrants in Ceuta to the border to take them out of Spain" That's Spain, as in the bit attached to Africa... www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Breaking : Deform UK reports significant rise in Snake Oil sales, with their National Sales Mgr reportedly receiving commission in excess of £5m. A spokesman said “when Snake Oil is your main product, having the UK’s top oil salesman also owning the company has significant benefits to him”

This is one of the (many) reasons why I didn't want my son to travel to the US for the World Cup. Even if they don't maliciously try to detain or deport you, there's a good chance they will just screw up the processes for getting there and back due to firing experience and/or hiring idiots.

bbc.co.ukFans 'devastated' as last minute US visa cancellationsPeople travelling to the World Cup have had their ESTA applications changed from approved to "travel not authorised".

Assuming it exists, when will the segment of the population, who are not just racist schmucks, clinging to Farage realise that he is just Trump lite, and is as beneficial to the UK as his idol is to the USA? Anyway, about that £5m......

Even the US military is joining in with the stupid statements: "continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire" There was me thinking a "ceasefire" was when you cease firing. How naiive am I? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I understand the reticence to replace Starmer - do we really want the Tory model of revolving door leadership to be the precedent? - but somebody needs to be properly selling a vision. Maybe his cabinet should just focus on telling us what Labour is actually doing, and why they’re doing it?

Now that Shabana Mahmood has publicly called on Starmer to exit, does that mean he can sack her.....please? Even if he ultimately goes anway. BBC News - www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c1... Keir Starmer to face cabinet meeting as over 70 Labour MPs call on him to quit - follow live - BBC News

Excellent, if depressingly inevitable, piece. Why can’t people see it?

🔴 Rick Wilson's Warning From America: Nigel Farage Will Be Your Donald Trump, Unless You Act Now The former Republican strategist and Lincoln Project founder has some hard lessons for Conservatives and Labour alike

So disappointing to see Reform gain seats in the Scottish elections. Why anyone up here would vote for what is essentially an English nationalist Brexit party is beyond me, but I guess disgruntled and disillusioned Tories needed a home to go to (and the Lib Dems were too far to the left for them).

Flyer arrives through the post for the forthcoming Scottish local elections- posted from Feltham, Middx (in England for int’l readers) telling me they will “put Scottish People first”. So, can’t even be bothered to have a Scottish address? Quelle surprise - it’s from Reform. Tossers Binned

Where is the US Democratic leader who stands up, and makes the speech that says “Blood on your hands”? The President The Vice President The Administration The Republican Senators The Republican Congress reps THEIR actions, THEIR lies, THEIR silence. THEY are responsible for every. single.drop.

Take one part Patel, two parts Braverman, a dash of red food colouring and a year’s supply of powercraze, and that should get you the perfect recipe for not just any Home Secretary, but a Home Secretary who is apparently in a Labour government. www.bbc.com/news/article...

bbc.comShabana Mahmood defends overhaul of 'unfair' asylum systemUnder the plans, refugee status will become temporary and new capped "safe and legal routes" into the UK will be created.

Watching the US descend into the abyss on a daily basis is so depressing, but surely if there was a reason not to vote for Reform and their ‘Trump-lite’ leader, this has to be up there with sirens and red flashing lights for a political health warning? We cannot become a Trumpian UK. Can we?

In essence, does the whole premise of the Trump/Putin ‘negotiations’ on Ukraine just boil down to the Russians having a bigger set of Epstein Files than the DOJ does? They must have something on him for him to let Putin make him look that subservient on his own patch.

It's no wonder the BBC is accused of a love-in with Reform. After you've lost the will to read further, it does consider the immigrants' perspective, but the first half reads like a Reform campaign starter. Ms. Minihane is hardly your average woman off the street. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

A cautionary tale for Lutnick, Vance , Bessent, Rubio et al: this is how it always ends, particularly if you have an ego (and you all do). It is just a matter of time, and 2028 is a long way off in Trump terms. Everyone can see the bus coming, but you will still end up under it.

How odd it is that Canada, Australia and countries across Europe expected to move to the right are rejecting Trumpian politics and voting in left of centre or centrists parties, but the UK, which has a supposedly centre-left party already in Government, seems to be quite happy to pursue them.

I would urge people not to sneer at or deride anyone who voted for Trump and go on to have cause to openly regret it. If all you have left to save your country and your democracy is mass public dissent, you will need these people to stand with you. Embrace them.

Kind of surprised nobody has drawn comparisons with The Apprentice, and whether the team that came up with the method of calculating the tariffs would be the winning one in this episode. If was a betting man, I’d be looking for odds that the Project Manager on this one might be getting fired….

From what little I know, I think Mark Carney has the right idea. Recognise Trump’s existence as a threat, and then steadfastly ignore him. Americans can’t; he’s systematically destroying their country, but the rest of the world? No more appeasement. Times will be tough, but we’ll live through it
