Thanks, JMF, for the shout-out! Was happy to have the chance to think and write about complex families and public policy.

How is White House demolition happening so quickly?! I live in a historic district in Madison, Wisconsin - and it takes a LONG time to get approval for any even minor change to one’s property. How can the bulldozers just be pulling the east wing apart, and why is no one stopping it?? Sigh…

Can’t wait to see all the new science that will be presented this spring at #PAA2026! Everyone is welcome, so please think about what research you have to share. Early career scholars, feel free to reach out if you have Qs about the submission process or @popassocamerica.bsky.social!

Great start to #IPC2025 in beautiful Brisbane, Australia! Legendary demographer Peter McDonald noted the dramatic change in analytic tools during his lifetime. Amidst all that can now be done from home with new data/methods: “don’t forget the real world because that is where life happens.” #IUSSP

Huge congratulations to Emma Romell (@emmaromell.bsky.social) who received her PhD in Sociology from UW-Madison today! Amazing scholar and human who will start a postdoc at Oxford (Nuffield College) later this summer. So proud and honored to be her advisor…! ❤️ Big congrats, Dr. Romell!!

Really helpful advice for those whose NEH awards are being cut in the current environment. Thanks, @jasonrhody.bsky.social ! We need insights from the humanities now more than ever…

Jason Rhody@jasonrhody.bsky.social

A few tips for NEH grantees: 1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP. 2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,

What a deal on this important book by my amazing colleague @jessicacalarco.bsky.social !

Heartbroken by this school shooting today in Madison. The school is in my son’s basketball league, so we have been there many times. Thinking of the parents, teachers and kids tonight who have lost someone dear to them - and/or who experienced the terrible trauma of this situation… 😢

A teacher and a student were killed in a school shooting in the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, the police said. The suspect was a student, and the death toll was revised to three, including the shooter. Follow updates.

Terrific workshop on “Translating Good Research into Good Policy” at #2024APPAM. Among others, Jon Schwabish gave great advice re data viz, Wendell Primus (veteran Hill staffer and my first post-college boss!) shared his sage perspective about how research can influence policy. Thanks, APPAM!

Our department is hiring an associate professor in population research! We have two NIH-funded pop research centers - @cdeuw.bsky.social and @cdhauw.bsky.social. Madison is a fun town - Badgers, beer and lots of cheese! 🦡🍺🧀

Fabien Accominotti@faccominotti.bsky.social

We're hiring at the associate level in the field of population research at UW-Madison. The call takes a broad view of what constitutes population research, and is agnostic as to research methods. Apply here! jobs.wisc.edu/jobs/associate-professor-of-sociology-madison-wisconsin-united-states

Looking forward to reading this important paper by @arielkalil.bsky.social and colleagues!

Ariel Kalil@arielkalil.bsky.social

Very happy to see our new paper published in Demography, in which we show that welfare reform had plausibly causal and substantively important negative effects on the quality of emotional support in the home environments of young children. read.dukeupress.edu/demography/a...

You are up to date.
