Celebrate World Biodiversity Day with us! 🌍 The Portuguese Data Stewards Network invites you to an online session highlighting the importance of data management and curation in preserving our scientific and natural heritage.

📅 May 22nd (Tomorrow!) 🕒 2:00 PM (WEST) | Duration: 1h (includes Q&A) 📍 Online via MS Teams We will introduce the AURORA Shiny App, designed to facilitate deep-sea biodiversity data sharing, developed by our Digital Marine Biodiversity Lab.

A large share of biodiversity data remains stuck in spreadsheets or in messy, non-standard formats, limiting its use for research and decision-making. AURORA Shiny App is designed to overcome some of the challenges in turning raw datasets into FAIR, standardised Darwin Core tables.

What it does: • Guides data cleaning, formatting, and quality control through a structured workflow • Validates taxonomic names against backbones like WoRMS and GBIF • Transforms raw data into Darwin Core tables (event, occurrence, eMoF) ready for a DwC-A

Letícia Brito, PhD student in Biology, joined a field trip in Aveiro to study water hyacinths 💧. The team observed their presence from the freshwater of Pateira de Fermentelos to the brackish waters of Ria de Aveiro and noted their strong post-summer growth 🌱💚. #cesam #ua #science #aveiro #biology

Letícia Brito, a PhD student in Biology, attended the 17th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants in Lisbon 🇵🇹. She joined the ERC Macrophyte Group, expanded her professional network 🌍🤝, and reconnected with professors from Brazil and potential future collaborators 📚✨. #cesam #aquaticplants #ua

Challenges and Opportunities in the Study of the Deep Ocean On October 3rd, Ana Hilário, a researcher at CESAM, University of Aveiro, took part in the SOA Aveiro Journey and presented the topic “Challenges and Opportunities in the Study of the Deep Ocean.”🐙🌊✨

Our PhD student joined the One Ocean Expedition , sailing 22 days from Azores 🇵🇹 to Greenland 🇬🇱 aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Between science , sailing, and steering the helm, and even climbing the rigging, it was a unique chance to rethink how we engage with the ocean . UT Austin Portugal Program

Between September 15-19, our PhD student Laura Trovão attended the MAF-WORLD COST Training School in Genova, learning to value and restore marine ecosystems using ecological and economic tools, exploring coral conservation, and diving in the Portofino MPA. 🌊🪸💙

During European Researchers’ Night 2025, our lab team brought deep-sea science to Fábrica da Ciência Viva, Aveiro; Torreira & Armamar, with games and talks that inspired curiosity, promoted inclusion, and highlighted the value of ocean research.🌊🔬🌍

At the University of Aveiro’s Research Summit 2025, PhD student Laura Trovão presented “Valuation of Deep-Sea Ecosystem Services – an Overview,” earning the Best Communication Award for originality, clarity, and impact, boosting international recognition.🔬🌍

In June 2025, our student Ana Carolina Lopes (University of Aveiro) boarded the research vessel RV Pelagia for the TwinDeeps Expedition 🚢. For 2 weeks, the team sailed from Las Palmas to Leixões, exploring the depths of the Gorringe Bank A huge thank you to CIIMAR, IMR, and NIOZ ! ✨

You are up to date.
