What a year! Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our work.

The Journal Investigates@investigates.thejournal.ie

It's a year since we launched The Journal Investigates! Since last September, our team produced 28 major investigations, consistently exposing injustice and driving change. Find out more about our work – only made possible thanks to your ongoing support: jrnl.ie/6808070

Returned to work this month after a fascinating year full of laughs, yawns and learning... where my little girl turned into a headstrong explorer. It's been a swift transition, getting stuck straight into investigations, and adjusting to a new work-life balance. But it's nice to be back at it!

Ever use a CPAP or BiPAP? Thousands of sleep and respiratory devices were recalled in 2021 due to a defect related to foam inside them. Our investigation now reveals there have been 70 incident reports in Ireland potentially related to affected machines. Latest by Jane Moore and I:

@investigates.thejournal.ie also understands that one legal action has been instigated in the circuit court in relation to such a device. Separately, one man we spoke to said that he believes he contracted a serious lung condition as a result of using one of the machines for around a decade.

Today, as part of our series exposing cancer care delays, I reported that adjuvant chemo is not being given to many breast cancer patients on time. When this was put to the Minister of Health, she said there's "no point" in promising extra hospital staff to tackle treatment delays:

People are encountering delays in the Irish healthcare system at every step of their cancer journey. Our latest investigative series highlights the devastating impacts this is having all across Ireland. This morning, I reported that hospitals are failing to consistently start chemo on time:

thejournal.ie'It's getting tougher': Hospitals failing to consistently start chemo on timeThis is just one of the many delays faced by people with cancer in the public healthcare system.

Then, we asked our readers to share their experience of delays to cancer diagnosis and treatment. “I’m in a constant panic by not knowing” - Emma from Dublin People felt forgotten, holding their breaths, unable to think about their future. (Thank you so much to everyone who got in touch.)

People are more likely to get – and die – from cancer in Ireland than in many other European countries. Without urgent action, the toll on people in Ireland as well as our health service will be “immense”, the Irish Cancer Society warned today:

Last few days to apply… deadline is this Friday 04 July:
