Thank you Nick, I must revisit early Roxy Music!!

Nick Black@fuzzynick.bsky.social

.... ordered after a fly-by mention in @markabowles.bsky.social's superlative 'How Do People Stay The Same' (@galleybeggars.bsky.social) - an early Roxy Music album of a novel, more interesting ideas and thoughts per page than many writers have in their whole career.

Wtaf? Always remember:”“We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.”

Not my assembly, but a friend: the eccentric Shakespearean critic G Wilson Knight was invited to speak at their school and after quoting from King Lear, started taking his clothes off.

We're all living in man-made societies. Nothing is inevitable. All of these structure were the result of man-made choices. Other choices were - and still are - available.

Should we be following in the footsteps of Vienna, Austria's social housing projects? 🌳🏘 This socialism blasphemy 😉 has made them the world's most livable city, with renters paying a third of what people pay to live in London, Paris, or Dublin!

I sometimes crossly wonder if the novel has evolved at all from Tristram Shandy but there are plenty of fine writers around at the moment intent on keeping that particular envelope pushed (e.g. @markabowles.bsky.social and @stuhennigan.bsky.social but there are dozens of others).

This was a brilliant discussion between @markabowles.bsky.social and @susannacrossman.bsky.social about literature, the self, memory and so much more! Well worth your time - plus a brilliant reading by Mark from his new novel, How Do People Stay the Same.

I'm thrilled to share my new essay in @aeon.co Who are The Fire Tamers? For the past year, I travelled through salt marshes, visited remote farmhouses & oncology clinics to uncover the secret world of French healers working in parallel with conventional medicine. aeon.co/essays/who-a...

This one takes you deep, so deep, if you let it, that it's almost unbearable. Like @markabowles.bsky.social previous novel, All My Precious Madness, the narrator's story feels too personal. Not his person, his past, his thinking, but my own.

Started #HowDoPeopleStaytheSame by Mark Bowles – and the first few pages just blew my mind. Honoring it with a deliciously bitter #espresso as a tribute to the author’s previous novel. @galleybeggars.bsky.social #Booksky

Thank you! Glad you liked it.

Our choice for July BOTM is this sharply witty yet beautifully tender novel HOW DO PEOPLE STAY THE SAME by the inimitable @markabowles.bsky.social, from @galleybeggars.bsky.social This fearsome and uplifting novel has won over us and Lilli the cat. She thoroughly recommends it. buff.ly/530yCyx
