I've been watching the first season of Torchwood and it's really hitting me just how much of a bite out of the world global financial crisis took. More than anything textual, that's the main thing that's buffeting me.

It's been quite a couple of decades, hasn't it? Its weird to look at Torchwood's costume, location shoots and think 'blimey, that's the high point of the New Labour years' but it's right there on screen. The last hurrahs of linear telly, but also of a version of UK life as shown on it.

For anyone who was local, I started my London life in Rachel McMillan Halls opposite Rose Burford college on Creek Road. One night we walked along the river to the Millennium Dome as it was being built while the Tate and Lyle factory belched fire.

My life in London started near the top of Deptford Church Street at the end of the last century when the docklands were still odd factories and car crushing yards and deserted pubs and the last bits of industries now passed. It was damp and misty and the organising hands of money weren't at work

I am beginning to realise that the logic of something that is defined as 'legacy' seeing themselves as being in direct competition with something self defined as 'disruptive' is often lost by allowing the disruptor to define what the purpose of the something being disrupted is.

The purpose of, for example, the BBC is not only to deliver recorded and live entertainment. The purpose of a newspaper is not only to deliver ads. The purpose of the NHS is not only to deliver specific profitable treatments in efficient ways.

I am beginning to realise that the logic of something that is defined as 'legacy' seeing themselves as being in direct competition with something self defined as 'disruptive' is often lost by allowing the disruptor to define what the purpose of the something being disrupted is.

The purpose of the legacy something being disrupted is often wider than the narrow portion of its activity that the disruptor has chosen to focus on. The disruptor, having different purposes, is not constrained by the same goals as the legacy something is.

Well, that's my dream of The Seventh Dimension coming back on the wireless done for. I'm so sad at the running down of BBC radio drama. It's something the BBC has led the English speaking world in. It feels like we got podcasts proliferation because other countries didn't have BBC audio output

no offence but why is the British public being asked about my medical diagnosis, would it also like to check out my ankles and my elbows to decide whether I really have hypermobile joints, should I cough on them next time I have a cold so they can confirm that I'm ill

YouGov@yougov.co.uk

With much media coverage of a government report that ADHD and autism are being over-diagnosed, a claim which some experts have disputed, half of Britons now believe that the conditions are being over-diagnosed Over-diagnosed: 50% Under-diagnosed: 17% About right: 17% yougov.com/en-gb/daily-...

The Timelords are so weird in Doctor Who because they've had The Matrix far longer than we've had the world wide web. The Master is a shit poster. The Doctor says he's left but still check twitter and LinkedIn. Borusa is a creep in the DMs. Omega is still running Facebook groups despite no face

Do you remember all of the hand wringing about bubbles Post 2016 shocks from the right? We are currently seeing what an actual filter bubble looks like with a worldwide proportion of far right folks and fellow travellers living in a confected reality that in no way actually resembles our actual one

I don't say this lightly. It's an immense and hideous problem that is painting targets on backs of people just going about their lives. I know I sound like that screechy kid meme 'your actions have consequences!!!' but that the real situation. Fantasy taken as reality fucking innocent people over

I so want to label all of my bits of tech with phonetic spellings of its purpose in this "nolidge mashin" "noyz bocks" "seen mira" "pezt wallet" "voyz katcha"

Been reading Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household today. Bloody hell it's good. Love that the protagonist builds himself a womb to return to in the soil of Dorset. I know he isn't on an existential mission, but blimey it reminds me of some of Ballard's short stories.

Had a dream last night about trying to prevent many friends and aquintances from attending a lecture they had been invited to by people enacting Dennis Wheatley's secret plan for gentleman fascism. I'd my phone and wallet so had trouble getting to the lecture near Liverpool Street to spoil it

Happy birthday Jodrell Bank!

Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, the world’s largest steerable dish radio telescope at the time (now the third largest). was switched on in 1957 on this day. Built by Bernard Lovell, it was the only radar device that could track the carrier rocket of the Soviet Union’s Sputnik I.

I think in the dream I was part of a resistance comprised of drag queens and we were operating to somehow hamper the establishment of gentleman's club fascism. It was a very British noir dream.

This is absolutely bloody fantastic and you really should read it. Great work!

"It isn’t point scoring that has delayed care reform, but disagreements on how to find the money and what to spend it on... What’s been missing is a leader willing to lead." I look at 20 years of failed adult care reform - and what Labour's proposals could miss By me, for @theleaduk.bsky.social

You don't realise until you live with mental ill health, distress or trauma it's possible to be the wrong type of person living with mental ill health, distress or trauma Most societies haven't managed to incorporate mental ill health, distress and trauma into ideas of society #worldmentalhealthday

People love to pontificate on whether there is 'too much of the mental illness' in society and look for reasons that just happen to confirm their own prejudices about what is wrong with society. Far fewer ask what it means to live with mental ill-health, distress, trauma #worldmentalhealthday

The question of who or what any of us who live with mental ill-health, distress and trauma can or could be in relation to others in society who do not face the same disabilities is generally pushed to the back of discussion. What our place should be is usually 'not that'. #worldmentalhealthday

I am not sure I like the modern age of being forced to listen to super rich fuck wits. But I'm not sure I liked the previous modern age of being forced to listen to super posh fuck wits. The least interesting people have the loudest voices and bought the fucking platforms to bore from.

This is a smashing site and project, this.

Note: the headline is absolutely not what the report said www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... (it was more measured and the actual risk of over diagnosis is based on "well numbers are increasing" which, you know, we could also say of cancer)

Can't recommend this book highly enough. It's a delight from cover to cover and presents a very different way of listening to The Fall during the period Steve covers.

I feel like the idea that public service broadcasting needs to go head to head with streaming services like Netflix is absolutely wrong. It needs to go head to head with whatever the shit is that gets to people through YouTube which really isn't the same problem at all.

I wonder if in about three years time you'll be able to hire people to clean and reset your algorithms and tweak them to show you what you'd most like, not what is most likely to fry your brain.

I'm increasingly seeing AI used in ways that are closer to the adulteration of grain. The appearance of abundance, but made of sawdust. In this case a scam you are perpetrating on yourself, in other cases a degrading of quality of output to the extent that value can only be reaped by scam.

Of course, in a wider sense your measure of value might be 'can I get someone to pay me for this?' but in this case it's more 'congratulations you are feeding your bairns one of those fake varnished meals from the window of a restaurant. Yes you gave them dinner but it's got nothing in it to eat'
