YA fantasy author of THE BONE BRIDES (Sept 29, 2026, Page Street). Theatre director. Occasional anime panelist. Once jammed a knife into my leg while carving a pumpkin. Queerer and queerer. She/her. Rep: Hannah Andrade

THE BONE BRIDES is out TODAY! Hayao Miyazaki meets Guillermo del Toro in this Sapphic YA portal fantasy in which a girl must save her changeling girlfriend from a terrifying faery realm.
I have waited since I was 7 years old to be able to say...
GO FIND ME IN YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE! ❤️
SO, over the phone while at the mall with the wee one: "I think this would've been easier with two people. Because he can wander off now. He--- Yeah, he just walked out of the store. Oh, and I just shoplifted because I was holding stuff and followed him. I think I'm going to have to call you back."
Chinese mycologists described a new giant fungus named Dianjunus rex whose ancient family lineage dates back to just after the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs. Its upright fruiting bodies can grow up to 20 inches tall and weigh as much as 5 pounds! 🧪

This year’s Irish Hallowe’en turnip, and a handful of those of from years past (they don’t always make it, if they rot before dessicating)

I really, really love doing these B&N signings because I get to watch all the customer comings and goings throughout the afternoon. It's SO FUN to see who's buying what and to chat with all sorts of people---from the queer teens I wrote the book for to people I never would've expected to buy it!
Can I admit that one of my favorite things at a con is when I'm on a panel and then, later in the day, a stranger who was in the audience sees me elsewhere and tells me I did a good job?
It's like getting a Gold Star in Author! How it warms my former-gifted-kid heart!
The texture of the dude's face in all the Wicker images STRONGLY activates my nails-on-the-blackboard textural issues, and while I am SO glad we're getting weirdo movies, I really need this particular one (or just the images of it!) to disappear from my feed o_O;;;;;
Read this and went, "Wait--- But how is voicemail different from an answering machine? Why wouldn't I still need to repeat the number???" Took MORE than a minute for it to dawn on me o_O;;;;
Did I mention that I'm going to be at World Fantasy Con this weekend? I'm going to be at World Fantasy Con this weekend!
I'll be attending the Mass Autographing Session Fri night + moderating the panel "Fae, Fairie, Faerie, or Fairy? Cultural Differences" Sat morning + generally running around!
Friction is so important to creative work that people *add* friction to allow themselves to do it.
Just one example: meter, in poetry.
You create a framework that restricts you, that limits you, in order to give your thoughts a scaffold within which to build.
the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity.
read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me
Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

THE VAMPIRE by Rudyard Kipling. A haunting & macabre poem in which a hapless young man is beguiled by a female #vampire who appears in a scarlet shroud. Striking bat motif and limited edition Boston, 1898 #31daysofhalloween
This morning I got to talk to the creative writing class at my old high school, and ohhhh man, THIS is why I write, and why I write specifically for teens!
Also, one kid said that my response to one of their questions was "actually really based," and I will be living off that compliment for MONTHS.
it took four hours and emails across three agencies to determine if a simple, polite email invitation was legitimate, in case you're wondering whether AI has improved efficiency in my field
The wee one has added a new word to his arsenal in the last few days: "bok! bok!", meaning "chicken." Probably the least useful of his words so far, but definitely the cutest.
Eternally trapped in the "maybe if I just eat something, I'll feel less exhausted" loop in which I end up still exhausted, not having gotten my work done, and with an overstuffed belly.
Realizing that I'm 2 for 2 of making the wee one's Halloween costume entirely out of leftover fabric from old costumes of my own. Just another reason that sewing for a tiny human (rather than an adult) is delightful ^.^
Okay, but is there anything quite like the high of being able to cobble together enough perfect fabric scraps for a project that you don't need to buy any new fabric? Whooooo-eeee!

There is little that I despise quite like I despise hold music's being CONSTANTLY interrupted by a recorded message. Can't you at least let me focus on my work while I wait??
Public schools in Utah banned a best-selling Jodi Picoult novel and ordered all copies destroyed.
So ...
Picoult arrived at a Salt Lake City high school this weekend with 600 copies of the book.
And she gave them all away, for free.
"Applause and cheers erupted."

So we fly a pride flag in our front yard in a very conservative neighborhood and it’s been there for the last few years. Someone put this in our mailbox and my goodness…
How to crack up your therapist:
Her: "Which of these words resonates as a way you might heal that 'resentful' part [previously chosen]?"
Me: [chooses "compassion"]
Her: "Great! How can you show yourself compassion when you're feeling resentful?"
Me: "Wait, it's compassion for ME? Never mind then."
Look, it made perfect sense to me that if I were feeling resentful of other people, trying to feel compassion for them instead would fix it! Apparently I'm supposed to be showing MYSELF compassion for the feelings of resentment?? Nah.
What an incredible weekend! Thank you so much to Linden Tree Books, Barnes & Noble Birdcage, and the Pleasant Pheasant; to my inimitable conversation partners, @samjamtimtam.bsky.social and Cheri Radke; and of course to everyone who came out to support THE BONE BRIDES! 💙💙🦴🐇
Throwback to the chicken-wire "ghosts" that I made to haunt our hillside year-'round at our old place. I really wish they had as good of a spot at our new one. I miss looking out the kitchen window at them.
Every now and again, I stop and remember that my first two celebrity crushes were Barbra Streisand (as Dolly Levi) and David Hyde Pierce (as Niles Crane), and, really, can you get any more bisexual than that?

Saturday was World Mental Health Day, so I wrote a possibly-too-honest article for The Nerd Daily. This one means a lot to me. thenerddaily.com/marley-rose-...
This is a beautiful and relatable piece. I too have struggled with depression nearly my entire life, and I wish I had books like THE BONE BRIDES when I was in high school! 🫂
