Fifty-four pages... SO FAR

I don't like that this is probably going to be 70-80 pages. That is simply too many pages for me to draw at the pace I draw

Most of these thumbnails aren't anything, but Dieter's kind of cute here. (The face of a man trying his hardest not to cry)

Thumbnailing is actually the least beloved part of the process to me. I have to use my brain a lot.....

Susanna Clarke is my all-time favorite author, but her releases are infrequent. Today is fucking Christmas

Dieter giving credence to the idea that to truly love a place, you also have to kind of hate it. BOY does that man hate Sharlayan, even while he thinks it's the most beautiful country in the world & had always planned to return (until life happened to him) & tbh still misses it a little

In retrospect, Dieter isn't sure. He felt somewhat betrayed by Zenos demanding a duel to the death after, in some sense, coming to Dieter's rescue, even though Dieter knew not to have expected anything different. He was just SO ANGRY (in part because he felt stupid)

The custom lore for this is that Dieter & Zenos actually encounter each other in Ala Mhigo & do the Healer role quests together before Dieter goes off to space, & they sort of come to an understanding—or Dieter thought they had, & interpretted Zenos coming after him in that context

I actually think that's a really interesting aspect of Emmanellain's character. If Ishgard had been at peace or he hadn't been born into a family of knights, Emmanellain would not have been a knight. The ill-fitting & non-negotiable family expectations set him up for failure

Of course, Dieter—also from a family with rigid expectations that happened to align with his nature & talents—is not the person to appreciate that, despite also rejecting his family's expectations. But he had intended to meet them & views that version of him as his true self

Tbh Dieter would feel much more neutral about Emmanellain if he were just some society dandy; but Dieter's sense of honor was SO offended by watching Emmanellain goof around in the Sea of Clouds. People are dying??? & you're treating this like a game???

Also this is probably Dieter's biggest era for having something to prove. He wants to make a good impression on Edmont & impress Haurchefant SOO BAD, & instantly develops a dynamic with Emmanellain that usually you have to be raised together to achieve

After hating Alphinaud's guts for over a year, Dieter became friends with him like a quarter of the way to the Churning Mists. Otoh, Emmanellain put his foot in his mouth in their first conversation & their relationship is still weird like a decade later. HIGHLY situational
