Hello Bluesky! A bit about me: I completed my PhD in Mesopotamian Archaeology at Penn a few years ago. After some time in corporate life, I decided to start a company to make archaeology interesting (& more accessible) to a new generation. Centered around travel, I created merakivatravel.com

merakivatravel.comMerakiva Travel - Home - Group Trips for Millennials and Zillennials | History & CultureGroup trips around the world for the social, curious traveler. Crafted for ages 25-45, our trips combine adventure with comfort.

Shouldn’t be lost on people that often it’s the military that stands up to dictators, when the dictatorial thugs are in the streets Don’t think we are anywhere close to there but… history is history.

i am not being pollyannish when i insist that the people who sign up do not sign up to advance a president’s domestic political agenda www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I'm still a believer in taxes, but... Being on the business owner side, I get the anti-tax sentiment! What do you mean I'm paying $412 in taxes to get $1000 in take home salary?? Obviously that's including both employee and employer taxes, but sheesh.

It's very funny to me that I joined Bluesky because of all the academics and tech people but I use it 99% to just read about NFL news... I left Twitter in 2020 and had been missing that sports "live tweeting" ever since

Completely infuriating that 99% Democrats are acting like we're still in an Aaron Sorkin drama

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

we have a president with a tenuous grip on small legislative majorities who is out of the gate with a flurry of dramatically unpopular orders and who has just demonstrated his weakness on the international stage. if i were an elected member of his domestic opposition, i might try to draw real blood.

Well, all of the Trump actions in the FIRST WEEK are bad, and I get the 1930s Germany comparison. But... can't imagine that Germany in the 30s so obviously just hurt the entire population, so quickly, for no good reason.

Stop federal budget spending? Ok, quick recession thanks Deport 50% of all farm workers? Great, we can have can a famine just like Mao's Put 25% tariffs on countries that make all our good? Inflation too, how perfect

One thing I've learned in 1.5 years of #entrepreneurship is how exponential growth feels, when you're starting from 0... All good to hear "wow in 6 years I built my biz to $1m by growing 2x every year" but that means year 1 was like $10k... And that's ok! 2x, 2x, 2x, 2x...

This, tbh, was the failure of the TikTok ban Saying “China has your data” doesn’t seem scary. Give examples of what they could be doing… maybe people get that

Shannon Locke@shannonwlocke.bsky.social

It was never clear why I should be worried about China having my data. It is crystal clear why I should be worried about the red US Gov't having that same data

I saw someone post about how China may or may not have used Strava data to identify who was based on nuclear bases and then who else they know. Why would they need to know this? Starts with B and ends with Mail Meta isn’t good but it isn’t trying to get nuclear codes!

Goal is to not just report on the archaeology of the week (well covered by many outlets) but to give more context, teaching a bit in the process. Like it, think it needs something? Let me know! (Very much a work in progress so don’t be too harsh 😅)

The gap between current "reasoning" models and AGI is really obvious when you just have it do... scheduling. It *can* eventually get to an answer, but even just dealing with some simple "don't book during a holiday" logic it takes quite long and isn't 100% correct.

Just landed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the first time: First impressions, this is nothing like I expected. Lots more to see, but it’s very modern. Reminds me more of Dubai than I’d seen… Lots more to come

One of the quick learnings from posting on YouTube on my personal account (vs. my business account): WOW people resonate much more with a personal account. For ~ same # of views, I'm getting 4x the number of subscribers. Plus way more "this is good, thanks dude" comments.

I just realized that #Survivor Tribal Council is definitely just the vibes of a grad seminar discussion The secret we hide in the seminar is that no one did all the reading… Professor Jeff Probst!

Would people be interested in watching an archaeologist live stream the new #IndianaJones game that comes out next week? 🤠 (If enough people say yes, I can write it off as business expense 💲)

If you want to lose faith in humanity, read the comments on videos about the #UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting/assassination Seemingly every comment is joking about out of network coverage or just gleeful. Or implying he deserved it because he made millions of $$. ... what?! Really sad and gross

Anyone up for some experimental archaeology?? "The vase had a cocktail of psychedelic drugs, bodily fluids and alcohol. The concoction was flavored with honey, sesame seeds, pine nuts, licorice and grapes, which were commonly used to make the beverage look like blood." 🏺

usf.eduUSF professor confirms Egyptians drank hallucinogenic cocktails in ancient ritualsThrough advanced chemical analyses on an Egyptian vase at the Tampa Museum of Art, Davide Tanasi confirmed the vase last held a cocktail of psychedelic drugs, likely for a magical ritual.

🎉WOW, just hit 1k followers on here!🎉 Bluesky is wild - that’s more followers than I’ve ever reached on any platform Starter packs are part of it, but also tapping into the right communities

I know #academia has issues with #AI but wow, it is truly amazing how easy it can make summarizing and understanding foreign language articles. In grad school, I would have spent an hour using "CTRL + F" plus Google Translate to even know if the article was what I wanted. Now, I just ask the AI

A lot of the concern with AI is how it hallucinates or creates new information that is wrong. But as someone (forgot who!) said recently - it is the world's most powerful summarization engine. And it's translations are FAR better than my own ability.

#NotebookLLM took 3 sources (only 1 in English) and gave a very detailed and correct (as far as I can tell from the source translation) interpretation of a Roman Villa This... is far better than the alternative! I don't see a strong argument against this. What do you think?

What they don't tell you about filming a Vlog to put on Youtube... going through the clips takes FOREVER This one video from a couple hours at an archaeological site in Tunisia has 350+ clips to go through. I was only there for less than 8 hours! Assembly cut alone is hours of work :/

I’ll never forget being in high school and playing Magic until the sun came up. And us Magic friends telling other friends that we stayed up all night playing Magic, and them thinking we were learning magic tricks 😂

I think what’s missed in this is Hot Ones & mainstream shows are non-political, which is actually where Dems need to be. Repubs can be on brain-rot like Rogan because that’s already pseudo-political and that’s where their voters are.

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

This is infuriating. "It never happened because the show 'didn’t want to delve into politics'... the Harris team got that reaction nearly 'across the board' when trying to book [Harris] on the same types of non-political media that happily welcomed Trump. www.thedailybeast.com/hot-ones-tur...

I've been wanting to do a tour to Iraqi Kurdistan for a bit - love the region and did my archaeology research there. I was holding off because of Israel-Gaza conflict, but could now be the right time?? What are people's thoughts? #Iraq #tourism #travel #archaeology www.cnn.com/travel/weste...

I really like the remove quote on Bluesky. Compared to other platforms... I commented on a TikTok, saying they were misrepresenting a quote - they made a video saying I'm wrong. Tbh, I don't care that much! I wanted to remove comment because not worth my time to debate, but can't really there
