Last week we hosted a live show on AI and warfare, going deep on the use of AI in Gaza, and it's now live on our Computer Says Maybe feed.
Exceptional group of guests: @marwasf.bsky.social, @docmattmoudi.bsky.social, Karen Palacio (aka kardaver), and Wanda Muñoz.
Essential if difficult listening.
Given Germany's panic over Palestine solidarity, it's clear what clothing the Berlinale will deem "not compatible with the liberal democratic basic order."
(Yup, this is a real rule: www.kbb.eu/en/hausordnung – and yup, artists are striking: filmworkersforpalestine.org#strikeberlin...)
Heart shattering to learn an Israeli drone has targeted and assassinated Mahmoud Almadhoun, one of the founders and chefs behind the Gaza Soup Kitchen.
What started as four pots and essential ingredients in Bait Lahia had grown into a remarkable effort to feed 3,000 people daily.
“Although much attention is given to sophisticated, zero-click spyware developed by companies like Israel’s NSO Group, the Italian spyware marketplace has been able to operate relatively under the radar by specializing in cheaper tools.”

Impunity breeds more crime. Fourteen months of non-stop mass slaughter, shielded and supported by western powers, had unleashed Israel’s genocidal mania on full display. Good luck reigning back this monster.
243 days ago, Israeli forces attacked World Central Kitchen vehicles, killing 7 aid workers from across the world — including the US.
The US did not respond with policy change.
Today, Israeli forces reportedly attacked another car carrying WCK workers, killing at least 5 people.
Cybercrime laws across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are being weaponized to stifle dissent + crush freedoms – going beyond combating real crimes. The new @UN Cybercrime treaty could legitimize these abuses.

Hamra, Beirut where last night’s Israeli strike took place hours before the ceasefire. Looks like it hit a currency exchange shop.
Many displaced families in the commercial neighborhood have already packed up to return to southern Lebanon and Beirut southern suburbs.
People are returning in the thousands to their villages in Lebanon.
Land is not just property: It envelopes memory, community and identity.
In this unstable region, the concept of home transcends space and time.
It is existential. Personal. Political.
Our lives have been a one long intractable war interrupted by short intervals of ceasefires and not the other way around. We will never know peace until liberation from Israel‘s oppression and domination.
I hope the ceasefire in Lebanon holds. But there will be no peace as long as Israel maintains this ludicrous right to preemptively attack sovereign states if it wishes so.

Ceasefire went into effect. So many feelings but first and foremost: tired. People are tired. Thousands of cars heading south from displacement to check on their homes. #Lebanon
BREAKING: The ICC issues arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
AT LAST.

Imagine losing 50 to 100 members of your community every day for over a year. How can one grasp the scale of killing and loss of life in Gaza? Beyond the murdered are the injured, missing, amputated, disabled, elderly, children, and pregnant—imagine the unimaginable suffering they endure daily.
Yesterday, Al Jazeera journalist Hossam Shabat was injured in an Israeli double tap strike on a home in Gaza, where he had rushed to report on the first airstrike.
Shabat says he was deliberately targeted in the second airstrike, and he has reason to believe so.

Meet Google's Genocide Czar: Thomas Kurian!
Google Cloud's CEO is an industry leader in the deployment of AI for occupation & genocide—providing cutting-edge cloud computing tech via Project Nimbus to Israel's military, & enabling them to massacre hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza
This is all that remains of Al Najjar hospital in Rafah. The extent of the devastation only now coming to light because it is in the Israeli military controlled area.
There must be accountability for the depraved, illegal destruction of this hospital.
A German architecture foundation has rescinded one of its €10,000 (£8,360) awards from a British artist over an open letter he signed promising a boycott of Israeli cultural institutions. *The prize is named after a Nazi architect www.theguardian.com/world/2024/n...

Rightly put, the system of international justice is on trial. For over a year now, Israel & the US have been unraveling the post-WWII global order before our eyes. The threats and attacks they’re directing against the ICC, already a paralyzed body, is a case in point. mondoweiss.net/2024/11/turm...

THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
The report ends with a call to social media companies to increase their transparency about government censorship requests and to conduct thorough due diligence on the human rights impact of their content moderation and recommendation algorithms—a call repeatedly made but remains unanswered.
After 13 months of relentless slaughter and mass brutality in Gaza, we need to see more scrutiny from UN bodies and mechanisms for tech companies that see in this bloodshed a lucrative business opportunity despite mounting evidence of mass atrocities.
THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
The recommendations outlined by the Committee are quite timely especially for companies and investors who’re still conducting their business in Israel as usual despite the plausible risk of genocide and other egregious violations of international law in Gaza.
It calls on companies operating in Israel to divest and work towards ending any business activities that may contribute to Israel’s unlawful occupation —and to refrain from silencing or retaliating against their workers who disagree or protest over their business ties with the Israeli military.
THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
For example, it mentions reports of Israeli soldiers and investigators circulating photos of detained Palestinian women on their phones as well as forcing both men and women to strip naked in front of male soldiers during searches and being photographed and filmed while naked.
The Committee also delves into the disinformation campaigns and the vilification of UNRWA and independent UN human rights experts (including by Israeli officials), which “not only incites violence but also undermines the credibility and work of the UN and its human rights ecosystem as a whole."
THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
It particularly notes platforms’ biased approach to content moderation where “posts displaying a “pro-Palestinian standpoint” were disproportionately removed by social media companies compared with posts containing hate speech and incitement to violence against Palestinians.”
Among other horrific crimes perpetrated by Israel against women in Gaza including rape and sexual violence, the Committee notes the long-term harms of online sexual harassment (e.g. Israeli soldiers’ degrading photos on social media) “due to the pervasive and lasting presence of online content.”
THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
Big Tech companies that provide Israel with cloud-computing services and AI capabilities, namely Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, could soon find themselves complicit in abetting and aiding genocide and other atrocity crimes. www.accessnow.org/gaza-genocid...
The Committee also finds “Israel’s escalating media censorship, suppression of dissent, and targeting of journalists are deliberate efforts to block global access to information.” Social media companies get a non-honorable mention for their discriminatory censorship of Palestine-related content.
THREAD: The UN Special Committee investigating Israel’s practices published its report yesterday concluding that Israel’s warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide. Most notably, it captures some of Israel’s digital warfare and the conduct of social media companies.
First, the Committee sounds the alarm over Israel’s use of AI systems, “which rely on mass surveillance to process large volumes of data,” to direct its military campaign in Gaza—which have disproportionately increased civilian casualties and caused indiscriminate loss of life.
In that regards, it calls on states to hold companies fully accountable for complicity in violations of international law, including through providing Israel with digital products and services and/or through technology transfer and facilitation, including AI and automated decision-making systems.
Contrary to what NSO Group has claimed for years, court documents from the ongoing US litigation between NSO and WhatsApp reveal that the spyware maker is the one that “installs and extracts” information from targeted mobile devices. NSO knows who the victims are. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
