Starting off this February with a short, sweet, and serene cover of the gorgeous “Leaves From the Vine,” from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Check out the full version now on streaming platforms 🍃🧡

NEW CREDIT (kind of) GET (approximately) 😂 It's not quite new (I did this a while ago), and it's not quite a credit (at least not one of my usual ones), but for those of you preparing to skip work for the next few days to binge Hades 2 like the rest of us in the games industry...

I neither wrote nor produced their stuff; I just happen to be a guy who knows a LOT of people, so I got to help Darren Korb in making things happen. Something similar happened in Hades, where I had the joy of connecting Masahiro Aoki and Daisuke Kurosawa for the epic boss fight with Hades himself.

I guess this more or less qualifies as another example of what I've sometimes referred to as "Musical Biz Dev Support", but given that is not a real job title, I think Special thanks is pretty good for what is inevitably one of the best games of the year. If you roll credits, text me a pic!

I helped to facilitate and secure a couple of huge artist collabs on the soundtrack; listen closely for artist features from Louis Cole (of Knower) and Pau Figueroa (legendary Flamenco guitarist), amongst a couple of other special moments!

Jeff has been one of the unsung heroes of the VGM community ages as a violinist, composer of indie bangers, AND incredibly gifted arranger. He worked on the original show, and even wrote music on Steven Universe Future. I hope this album leads to more people realizing how awesome he really is!

I am SO psyched to reveal that I have joined the top-notch team at Interleave as their new Senior Composer, Music & Audio Director. Interleave’s an OUTSTANDING music and audio team whose current projects include Bioshock 4, The Outer Worlds 2, and a ton of other exciting AAA titles.

Having now joined the world of external development… Well, if you’ve ever wanted the chance to work together on making your game sound even more amazing, let’s do it! For the first time in years, I’m actually available for those sorts of things 😅

I’m going to be attending GDC the entire week, Sunday through Sunday, and would love to talk to you about how the seasoned badasses at Interleave can be elevating your next project. And for my absolute rockstar friends who are looking for their next place to call home… We’re hiring ❤️ talk to me!

They’ve previously worked on music, sound, tech, or VO for a massive range of titles that includes (amongst so many others) Horizon Forbidden West, Gears of War, Warhammer, FIFA, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Doctor Who, and many dozens of other spectacular franchises across the world of media!

I had the joy of music-consulting for (and, randomly, doing some synth design on) the official Naruto: The Symphonic Experience tour! This is a nation-wide tour of the legendary Naruto OST, live to picture (which is pretty darn cool, if I say so myself!) だってばよ! BELIEVE IT!

THE ROAD GOES ON... It's the end of an era, folks. After about six years of service, growth, and a ton of fun making some of the most popular games in the world, I'm thrilled to say I'm moving on to new challenges and departing from Tencent.

Tencent has been a company that taught me a lot, gave me a ton of opportunities to grow, and ultimately has formed kind of the bedrock of my career in video game audio. It will always be a part of me! ...So, what's around the bend? Well, you'll just have to wait and see 😉

Look, good gear doesn't make you a better musician, but it can inspire excitement and passion that makes practice more enjoyable, LEADING to improvements in technique. I've made more progress on piano in the last 6 months than 20 years bc I finally have a piano that feels good to play; it's crazy.

This is a fantastic article, and as someone who works for a Chinese studio, something I've noticed for ages. There are massive, massive games that have tremendous popularity that just don't really get any attention in the Western market, or get hand waved off. It's bizarre.

Here we go, something I've been drafting for a long, long time: how the US-centric approach to video games and their history / culture basically gaslights us who come from other realities: felipepepe.medium.com/the-gentrifi... AKA, why LAN Houses, PokéTibia & Bomba Patch rule.

NEW CREDITS! I couldn’t end the year without one more sick announcement; I had the joy of contributing to the world of Genshin Impact with these two animated shorts: Genshin Noir, and Tip the Scales, for this year’s Hoyofair as a cello soloist! Thanks to Robert Mai for the call!

NEW ANIME CREDIT Had a great time providing some very tender guitar for the second season of Tower of God! This show just keeps getting better and better, so I'm glad I got the opportunity to come back for round two :)

Scoring DC Metal Force has been such a blast, but few sequences were quite as much fun as Episode 4's moment of Luthor Supremacy, where a red sun threatens to let him take out Superman forever. To provide appropriate menace, I scored Lex with what is probably DC's first Djent theme!

I'm trying to grade my Berklee course this semester, and accidentally clicked the wrong "grades" link, leading to MY undergraduate grades. Apparently video game scoring was consistently one of my lowest grades each time I took those courses. ...uhhhhh 😅

NEW CREDIT! This has honestly been one of the hardest things to keep under wraps: DC Metal Force, a new Justice League animated miniseries, launched today on DC Kids and I had the absolute joy of writing music for it.

This is the first time I've gotten to be the lead composer on a western cartoon series, and the fact that it's for the Justice League, of all things, is just such a huge moment for me as an omega-level comic book nerd.

An absolute career highlight. I got to work with Cartoon Network's legendary "Cartoon Cartoon" shorts division. I wrote over an hour of high-octane rock orchestra music for this one.

As composers, we’re lucky; our ability to float into and out of projects as freelancers and external devs means that statistically, we tend to work on a lot more projects than many other types of creatives. It is a privilege and a luxury.

I guess I just want to say that any time you see me talking about something I worked on— know that it was the honor of a lifetime and something I put an incredible amount of care and thought into. You rarely see the days of work; just the final results. I always struggle to reach that end.

But the struggle is worth it. The challenges are worth it. The opportunity to craft something beautiful, exciting, mysterious, fun, painful— it’s the best job in the world, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Music’s just the best. God, I love the arts.

I will never stop being grateful for the chance to play in the sandbox of gods and monsters. To create things that are larger than life. To, hopefully, inspire a young musician to follow their dreams.

I don’t know why I’m feeling so contemplative right now, but… well, I’m just thankful. It would be so easy to just never get the opportunity to do this again. I’ve worked hard and trained at my craft, but my successes have largely come at the mercy and kindness of peers and/or strangers.

Your music is far more important than you are; most of the time, even when people love the score, they don’t remember the artist. That’s ok. That’s not what it’s all about. It’s about the art; the feelings we help to craft, the memories we create, the worlds we dream of. It’s sheer joy.

Composers are the likeliest EGOT winners because we are most often the ones who can cross into different mediums. With good fortune, you may get to contribute to redefining the sound of your favorite super hero, character, or franchise for a new generation.

3.5 hours of zoom later… MIGHT have a solution on how to combine both Articulation Sets and Negative Delay Compensation in Logic in an elegant solution (the ability to hard-quantize your data for orchestration AND use key switches on the same track, making it feel the most natural.) More soon…!
