There are a staggering number of issues on which the majority of Americans agree. Democrats should just start going down the list.

Lula won in part by banning online gambling

This is actually quite important. Caveat: Privilege matters, @scalzi.com and are white dudes, etc. But my parents taught me I could always make my way with direct labor if I kept my needs small and as a consequence, I have walked away from many an opportunity that was against my moral compass.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

Yes and also I have always been this way, even when I wasn't *John Scalzi* but just some newer author. I've never taken a deal that I thought disadvantaged me. When people attempted to give be shitty deals early on, I walked.

We’re going to be stuck with a lot of this kind of nonsense. I think one of the joyful parts of unwinding this mess will be vindictive kindness, like making it a free public course for all to enjoy.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Breaking news: President Trump said that his administration has developed a plan to transform East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-level golf course, saying the historic public facility will close Nov. 15 and reopen approximately 15 months later.

Red states build housing faster than blue states. So they can offer cheaper rent. If we want to liberalize America, we need to make living in liberal America cheaper.

The thing about the “$200 to boo El-Sayed” revelation is just how little money it actually is. You can turn passive beliefs into active behaviors for cheap.

My Uber driver just called HQ because we found some earrings someone left behind. Uber wanted him to deliver them to the customer after my ride to the airport. He said no. It turns out that despite Uber saying it would pay for the delivery, it failed to do so the last three times. Fuck you, Uber.

Holy shit, it gets better. The white lady has now called my Uber driver directly to ask when he’s going to turn TURN AROUND and deliver them. My Uber driver is great. He has now turned up his accent to 11 and is telling her “I go home for lunch. You come in Uber in one hour, I give you.”

Apparently the earrings are maybe from the Cartier store in Manhattan? She wants them returned to the store. Google Maps says it will take a ninety minutes in traffic to get there from JFK.

I hope for a future where having been employed at certain companies after a cutoff date makes you unemployable in tech. Flock and Palantir, as easy examples.

I have never wanted to run for office; it isn’t particularly in my skill set. But it frequently feels like even someone not terribly good at it could do better than many current folks simply by not being corrupt AF.

C-level to median comp remains a very, very good metric for how shitty a company is.

Robert Reich@rbreich.bsky.social

Starbucks’ CEO made 6,666x more than the company's median employee in 2024. In 2025, he made 1,794x more. And we're supposed to believe Starbucks can't afford to bargain a fair contract with its unionized workers? I will continue my boycott of Starbucks.

Second, the best tools to shape young world changers are expansive, not insular. At least if the kind of world change you want is expansive and doesn’t simply concentrate power in the hands of the few. Mainlining the tech bro indoctrination as a substitute for college does not a better world make.

Side note: only slightly less ridiculous than the mission statement is this gem from the incubation announcement. “San Francisco is meritocratic and accessible in a way that is hard to explain. The doors are literally open.” No. Just no.

“Our mission is to nurture the best young people in the world, and equip them with the tools to shape it.” First, there is no such thing as “the best young people in the world.” That whole concept is so antithetical to the notion of education that you should relinquish the title of educator.

Step 1 of my surgery today: sign four forms. Can I read the forms? No, because they are electronic and there is no screen. And they don’t show up in the app until after I sign them. They can print them down the hall as an “accommodation”.

Unless you want me to start putting “virtual” in front of your job title if you’re remote, stop calling them “virtual assistants”. The job is the job is the job, wherever it gets done.

I want to know the etymology of why British people say "bye" six times before they leave the call. It has a very particular pattern: "bye, bye bye, bye bye bye, *hangup*"

Do not call it CEO parenting. I’ve been a C for a long time, often running huge teams (currently over 500 folks) and I still do all sorts of mundane tasks, both at work and at home. Y’all can parent however you want but don’t try to pretend ignoring your kids is reflective of good leadership.
