Congrats @maxevry.bsky.social on the release of his latest epic deep-dive into a sci-fi classic, STRANDED ON EARTH: HOW NIGHT SKIES BECAME E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, in stores now. Here’s hoping he keeps these tomes coming. I can think of at least a dozen more films worth of the Evry treatment!

I am MOST of the way through Max's opus and it is FABULOUS and fascinating, do yourself a favor and pick it up to read all about the SEVERAL movies Spielberg almost made before E.T. (would kinda still love to see REEL TO REEL?!?)

Max’s book has my highest personal recommendation, the “gotta have it.” A darkened corner of the history of my favorite film is illuminated, and with it, some greater truths about Spielberg’s body of work as a whole. Absolutely worth your time and money, even from what I’ve read so far.

PROMETHUS is about a bunch of arrogant white colonial pop scientists and one rich asshole who plays god encountering another more ancient colonial civilization that thinks it’s god. The only people who have good sense are the POC grunts who fly the ship. It’s on cable rn.

A WORLD WAR II FAIRYTALE is an exquisite excavation of one of our most under-seen and undervalued horror films. Michael Mann may never revisit THE KEEP but this documentary is essential viewing. Recommended for anyone who has ever seen the good in an otherwise dismissed or disowned work of art.

The artist’s macabre short works have been adapted into eerily freaky 30-minute bites for television. We got a sneak preview of the next episode airing on HBO Max.

As someone who has written their fair share about movies which did not work, BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL was a fascinating and thoughtful meditation on a movie (Exorcist II) which maybe shouldn’t be reclaimed (?) but certainly deserves to be celebrated as a world class act of weirdness. Good stuff!

Not that Spielberg is a chump with that kinda thing but I worked for several years in a satellite TV newsroom and the control room scene in DISCLOSURE DAY is so authentic that they literally hired one of our sat operators to play one
