It is interesting how cities require small home additions to send postcards to the 10s to 100s of households within 500 feet of a property, while buying a 19x8 foot pickup truck and parking it on the street is far more upsetting to my neighbors & simply requires a visit to the DMV

In California, Vehicle Code Β§21 preempts cities from creating a "notify your neighbors before parking a 19-foot truck" rule even if council wanted one

The Bay Area does 1.3% of America's driving but pays 5.2% of the income taxes Congress now uses to bail out the federal highway fund. On Nov. 3, the same 5 counties vote on a transit tax that would raise less than their share of that bailout. 1/

Congress has to pass its next highway bill by Dec. 11: another transfer from general revenue, or a gas tax or per-mile fee that charges drivers for highways. These are the members who vote on it for the Bay Area: 4/

The gas tax hasn't covered the federal highway fund since 2008. Congress has refilled it from general revenue 10 times instead of raising it. From 2028, the Bay Area's share: ~$1.3B a year. The Nov. 3 tax for BART, Muni, Caltrain and AC Transit: $980M a year. 2/

The trust fund also pays for transit construction, and Bay Area agencies get some of that. I left it out: these figures count highway money only. The numbers build on @yonahfreemark.com and Thomas Brosy's Tax Policy Center piece on the shortfall: bsky.app/profile/yona... 3/

Yonah Freemark@yonahfreemark.com

The federal Highway Trust Fund, which funds road & transit, faces a >$318 billion shortfall by 2036. How can Congress address this? β€”Cut spending by 40% β€”Increase the gas tax β€”Implement new taxes (VMT, registration) β€”Transfer from the general fund We lay it out: taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/congr...

Where does the money from red light camera citations go? I would wish they go toward a ring-fenced fund that pays for corridor improvements, a la Donald Shoup

I hear it over and over: β€œWe can’t slow down car traffic (on this dangerous roadway and save lives) because doing that would slow down car traffic.” Up there with this: β€œWe could never make American cities less sprawled out because they are too sprawled out.” Make it make sense.

The reason we can't stop traffic violence is the same reason we can't stop gun violence. We don't want to.

Every big paper has run a story like this in recent years. Why nothing changes: β€œThe state can’t add more crosswalks, reduce the number of lanes or lower the speed limit on Union Avenue, all of which would take time and money,β€œ said the state DOT, which owns the road. πŸ”“: www.wsj.com/us-news/the-...

99% of Boston’s homes violate Boston’s zoning code. They are not illegal to live in, buy, or sell. But if Boston burned down tomorrow, it would be illegal to rebuild 99% of its homes the way they are today. When 99% of homes break the law, the problem is the law, not the homes. (1/8)

update: wild moment in the NY governor debate where Hochul says she wishes she pushed even harder on YIMBY policies… meanwhile, Blakeman literally *brags* about how his NIMBY policies have made housing so expensive

Sam@samd.bsky.social

Watching the NY Gov debate right now and holy fuck is Bruce Blakeman a piece of shit. for the love of god, vote for Hochul

I did my good deed of the day by reassuring an architect that it is okay to build multifamily residential without off-street parking within a block of a major regional train station. Yes, people will sign leases.

I participated in the #WeekWithoutDriving last week. It was great! I had to take my cargo-bike into the shop on the second-to-last day, but managed to go through the whole week without driving because of the scooter + bus combo.

Like Ivan Illich wrote in 1974 in "Energy and Equity": Americans work for their car before they work for themselves:

At one point my phone number was 212-1111 but I had to give it up because babies in my area code were calling me all the time

This is why your local safe streets advocacy group should run candidate questionnaires--and not just focus on bikes:

Today in #weekwithoutdriving I biked to the store, picking up a breadloaf and brought over a sandwich kit to my friend whose wife just passed away. I dropped them off on his kitchen table next to what I later realized was his wife's ashes he'd just received. Visit your neighbors and friends, folks

Not good, folks!

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

On my bike ride to the dentist I saw my friend walking and waved--these small joys are indescribable and can only happen outside of a car! He was participating in a work "step challenge, while I am participating in #weekwithoutdriving

Today’s #weekwithoutdriving I visited the dentist by bicycleβ€”and for the first time in close to 8 years of visiting, my normal bicycle parking space was taken! πŸŽ‰ Never have I been more excited to find a lack of parking πŸ€―πŸ˜† It was trivial to find another parking space

On my ride home I picked up remaining lumber for my bench project and saw a pretty mid-density construction nearing completion--street trees had been planted #weekwithoutdriving

The Bay Area public transit #MeasureRTM polling shows 48% support, 34% opposed, 18% undecided. This means only 1 in 9 of the undecideds need to vote YES to get over 50%. Volunteer w the campaign now to help make this happen, opportunities listed here: πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡ luma.com/connectbayarea

A new poll finds 48% support for the Regional Transit Measure, revealing divisions over whether residents should pay more to preserve Bay Area public transportation.

For #weekwithoutdriving, it was heartwarming to see bicyclists out and about in Burlingame, CA after walking to patronize a local coffee shop

We did our errands early in the day, while air quality was still healthy. Our region is under a "spare the air" warning, where residents are encouraged to avoid driving (traffic being ~50% of the region's emissions): www.sparetheair.org #weekwithoutdriving

In #weekwithoutdriving today, my father, my son and I biked to our local lumberyard, purchasing the wood to build a bench. They helpfully cut it for us and it all fit in my cargo bike. Shop local!
