A better approach looks at whether fiscal policy strengthens the economy’s capacity to grow, withstand shocks and meet its obligations over time.
This is the focus of our first policy brief, Fiscal Rules and Long-Term Inclusive Growth, from the Global Council on New Economics for the 21st Century, which I co-chair with Vice-President of Spain Carlos Cuerpo, published at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok.
I'm delivering a public lecture on my new book, The Common Good Economy, with Theos Think Tank at Southwark Cathedral, chaired by Hannah Rich with a response from Professor Anna Rowlands. Thursday 22 October | 19:00 BST, entry from 18:30 | Southwark Cathedral Nave, London Bridge | Free to attend.
We can't do 'good' in the economy with an economic theory that only tells us how to fix markets if and when they fail. The common good is an objective, not a correction, where the how matters as much as the what. @Book_Fair | 10 October | 15:00-16:00 CEST ➡️ event.buchmesse.de/de/sessions/...
Speaking about this tonight at the Spanish launch of my new book “Bien común” at Fundación Rafael del Pino in Madrid. More on Bien común: marianamazzucato.com/books/the-co...

New report looks at the UK’s newest public finance bodies, £77bn in combined capacity, which exhibit strong foundations but shared limitations, including that none can raise capital independently. We detail what needs to change at the institutional design level, & for the ecosystem as a whole.

A government cannot balance its current budget while starving the economy of the investment it needs. That is not fiscal prudence, it is deferred economic insecurity – and the UK’s lagging public and private investment are its outcome. New piece on what fiscal rules are actually for.
Looking forward to being in conversation with @ceciliarikap.bsky.social , @nsrnicek.bsky.social , Francisca Moya Marchi and @chakrabortty.bsky.social . Wilkins Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre, UCL | Tue 29 Sep | 17:30 BST

Today at UNAM, launching our new report, State Transformation for Plan México, that I co-authored with @laramerling.bsky.social . The goal is not simply more growth, but a different growth path — one that puts prosperidad compartida at its centre.
Delivering this requires a state architecture capable of protecting public investment, procuring with purpose, coordinating the public banking system, and asking for commitments in return when the state backs business.

At the heart of Plan México is a vision of prosperidad compartida — raising investment, expanding domestic productive capacity and ensuring that growth is shared across people, sectors and territories.
