Happy birthday, Lawren S. Harris. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Born on this day in 1885, Harris was a founding member of the Group of Seven. He brought a growing sense of abstraction and spirituality to his depictions of the natural world, seeking to express something beyond what the eye could see.

To mark the occasion, weโ€™re sharing an excerpt from singer and composer Beverly Glenn-Copelandโ€™s essay on Harrisโ€™s iconic ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ (c. 1924) โ€” a meditation on spirituality, Lake Superior, and what it means to stand in awe of the natural world.

In the foreground, we see a stand of tree trunks, mostly bare, with a few colourful boughs of abstracted foliage. Beyond lies an expansive lake, rendered in a broad swath of delicately modulated colour, & in the distance, the forested hill is but a collection of uniform shapes standing in for trees.

Through minimal, elegantly executed forms, Wood created a dynamic and expressive vision of the Canadian landscape. Her work confidently stands alongside that of the painters of her day, while demonstrating the unique possibilities of sculpture as a way of seeing and interpreting the land.

Elizabeth Wyn Wood (1903โ€“1966), ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜™๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ, 1928, plaster, 80.3 x 105.2 x 19.7 cm, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, purchased 1991, 1991.13.

Born in Orillia, Ontario, Wood (1903โ€“1966) transformed what sculpture in Canada could be. At a time when the landscape was largely the domain of painters, she brought it into three dimensions, translating islands, rocks and trees into clean, curving forms.

Her sculptures of islands in Georgian Bay & Lake Simcoe were groundbreaking, marking the first time an artist in Canada sculpted the landscape in 3 dimensions. In ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜™๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ, Wood depicts a lone, windswept pine on a small rocky island โ€” a subject beloved by her contemporaries in the Group of 7.

A new chapter is beginning at the McMichael. On July 26, 2026, we will temporarily close our doors to begin a once-in-a-generation transformation โ€” expanding our facilities for exhibitions, enhancing how we care for the collection, and strengthening our place as home to the art of Canada.
