I'm reading a book called The First Three Minutes by Steven Weinberg. (1979 Nobel Prize for Physics) This is what I've learned so far: I'm grateful there are people smart enough to become scientists to know all this stuff. And, if I ever get a small dog, I'll name it Neutrino. #TheFirstThreeMinutes

I turned the wrong way onto a road tonight. It was dark & I followed the car in front of me. I turned into the left turn lane on the wrong side of a very wide median. Thankfully, there was no traffic coming, & I was able to pull into a driveway & turn around. It happens. Geesh! Shook me up.

25 years ago tonight, I was on a plane from New York City to Maine after a long weekend getaway. I even ran in the Broadway on Broadway 5K on Sept. 9, 2001, Central Park to Times Square. On 9/10, I rode the Statue of Liberty Ferry to pass the time before going to the airport. I❤️NY #NeverForget

What if high school diplomas had expiration dates, and people had to recertify to prove they have the basic knowledge required to make decisions and problem solve? What if they had to demonstrate that they read a book or two since high school?

The federal minimum wage has been stuck at a paltry $7.25 an hour since 2009. Guess how much the wage would be today if it kept up with worker productivity over the years?

Huge corporations like Amazon, Walmart, and Uber are among the top employers of SNAP and Medicaid recipients. Meanwhile, their CEOs are raking in multi-million dollar pay packages. How is this not a bigger scandal?

Is the mailing from the Center for Voter Information legit? My husband and I received Alaska Absentee Ballot Applications. It feels creepy to me. I would only submit this information directly to an elections office. #2026Midterms #AbsenteeVoting #VoterInformation

One thing we can do to resist AI and data centers, is to turn to old school dictionaries and thesauruses to look up words. It won't turn back the tide, but it might make one feel a little bit empowered. #ResistAI

Free Pile Season in Juneau reminds me of the scene in Zorba the Greek when Madame Hortense (Bouboulina) dies, and the villagers in waiting infest her home like ants at a picnic and take all her stuff. #ME2AK #ZorbaTheGreek #FreePile #JuneauSummer26

I'm sure all the BlueSky folks are regular voters, but just in case, the Alaska Primary is Tuesday, August 18. Please vote if you haven't done so already. #AlaskaPrimary2026

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been at sea over 260 days, one of the longest carrier deployments in modern history. Sailors are trying to go overboard. The Pentagon has $200B+ for the war, but it can’t fix the toilets. My write-up in the link in the comments.

The National Education Association (NEA) gives Alaska U.S. Rep. Nick Begich a grade of F for his voting record and lack of support for public education. Senators Murkowski and Sullivan each earned a D.

Re: the Zuckerberg-yacht-ignores-call-for-help story: They say they were not obligated to assist the skiff. Sums up the GOP and oligarchs perfectly. They don't act ethically unless there's a law or regulation. Then they complain about regulations. Decent people help when under no obligation.

In America, we may not have affordable groceries or housing or child care or healthcare or affordable gas or energy or water prices. But we do have gold leaf horses and a Liberace-themed Oval Office while waiting on the golden ballroom…

#akleg #akelect This AK voter guide was a partnership between some of the largest news organizations in the state and I have to say the level of disregard from the congressional incumbents is truly staggering.

Interesting how Dan Sullivan's ads refer to the "lower 48 liberals." Does he exclude Alaskan liberals because he thinks he might offend us? #AlaskaPrimary2026

Susan Collins announcing she'll vote against a controversial nominee is basically the moment it becomes clear that nominee will be confirmed. It means Thune has enough votes to confirm, and thus, Collins gets a pass to look independent.

I belong to several travel groups on Facebook where people ask for travel advice. I'm beginning to wonder if these forums are just a ruse for Meta and AI firms to collect our knowledge to feed into its data centers?

The Trump administration takes money away from SNAP, away from hungry children, yet spends billions on a useless war. Where does all this money go? Who is profiting?

After 6 months in drydock, yesterday, the Leconte broke down in Gustavus and was stuck overnight, I believe, with passengers on board. We and other PEL to JNU passengers are trying to figure out what now. AMHS working on getting a boat out to complete the run today. We need a reliable ferry service!

Relief boat did not make it, so the State of Alaska chartered two Alaska Seaplanes to pick up stranded Leconte passengers in Gustavus & fly them to Pelican. Not sure about the freight and groceries for townspeople & Pelican Store. No help for ticketed Pelican passengers trying to return to Juneau.

No communication from AMHS, but the boardwalk messaging system tells us that a relief boat is to get people from Gustavus to Pelican. $522 later, we booked 5 pm flight to JNU with Alaska Seaplanes.

I'm reading Friendship: The Evolution, Biology, and Extraordinary Power of Life's Fundamental Bond by Lydia Denworth, and I came across a reference to Juneau's own Bob Fagan who studied bear play. #Friendship #BearPlay #MyThreeWords

I've been reading Empire of Light by Sidney Perkowitz. It explains vision, how light enters our eyes through the pupil, hits the retina, and all the cones and rods that send impulses to the brain that interprets what we see based on what we already know. In other words, it's magic. #ME2AK #LightYear

Light is one of my words for 2026. I'm also curious about AI. I came across this in the book, Empire of Light by Sidney Perkowitz: "Living intelligence imposes meaning that a computer cannot, to understand the visual field at a higher level of order than an uninspired flow of bytes." #EmpireOfLight

I ordered The Thug Cookbook for my son's Jan. 7 birthday from my local, independently owned bookstore about mid Dec. I checked after holidays, & it still hadn't arrived. Bookstore staff said problems with suppliers & post office & holiday backlog. I sent son my copy and waited some more. (1/2)

It's easier to sneak away to bed at 7 pm in winter after it's been dark for hours. Now, there's still enough light, like I should be doing something. #ME2AK #JuneauSpring2026
