Yesterday there was a general assembly of staff and students at Roskilde University in response to the firing of professor Michelle Pace and the repression of the student movement in solidarity with Palestine. The assembly unanimously agreed on five demands incl. the reinstatement of Professor Pace.

Just hours before the meeting, university management called one of the speakers in for a formal reprimande over the contents of an op-ed, describing the culture of fear, silence, and repression at Roskilde University; a university once known for its critical research and democratic organization.

Dominique is a brilliant scholar, an inspiring teacher, and a good friend, who should be commended for his courage speaking up in this repressive atmosphere rather than being sanctioned. The students seem to have a much better understanding of this than management.

Honorary doctors at Roskilde University have sent a public letter to the leadership of the university about the dismissal of professor Michelle Pace in the wake of her public criticisms of the genocide in Gaza, Danish anti-migration policies, and refusal to identify student activists

Som æresdoktorer ved Roskilde Universitet mener vi, at ledelsen må sikre fuld åbenhed i sagen om afskedigelsen af professor Michelle Pace og handle hurtigt for at få den afklaret.

They call on the leadership to: 1. Reinstate Professor Michelle Pace. 2. Provide a full and transparent account of the process leading to Professor Pace’s dismissal. 3. Clarify the circumstances in which researchers were asked to identify students involved in Palestine solidarity activities.

Co-wrote a piece [in Danish] on prison guard’s violence against incarcerated people in Denmark’s Prisons & the lack of accountability from the state and politicians. Prompted by a whistleblower and former prison guard’s allegations of regular beatings and destruction of evidence afterwards.

The gist of the article is that professor Michelle Pace was fired after 12 years at RUC, following an unusually quick and problematic process. She had been publicly critical of Israel's crimes in Gaza, Danish migration policy, and asked by university management to identify students...

...involved in Palestine solidarity, which she did not. Reporters obtained internal emails, showing university management looking for grounds to dismiss her. She was ultimately dismissed for "uncollegial behaviour" and for being "uncooperative" just before Christmas; she denies the allegations.

This is a case worth following for anyone who cares about academic freedom. I hope the article will only be the beginning of an investigation into both the firing itself and the increasingly repressive measures taken up against work that in some vague sense is deemed ‘too political‘.

This is a really important article about my previous place of work, the suppression of Palestine solidarity movement at Roskilde University, and the firing of one of my colleagues last year.
