I have hope for the future. When I the force trying to silence black and brown voices are met with young people showing their voice will not be silenced, I have hope. These higher education students know what their voice means, and that democracy is on the ballot. thegrio.com/2026/10/16/n...

They also know that is why early voting stations were taken from their campus at North Carolina A&T. They are standing with democracy. They are standing with us. They are standing with each other. Our leaders should do the same by ensuring students can exercise their voting rights.

More now than ever the leaders of organizations have to be brave and stand for humans and humanity, which means diversity. There are real world consequences for not doing so.

The ABA and APA have both removed their diversity and inclusion requirements for schools. This is another effort by the current administration to more narrowly define who belongs in higher ed. We must resist these blatant attempts to undermine higher education and our democracy.

How can we advance public trust in our nation's community colleges and other institutions of higher education? Alliance President and CEO Mike Gavin recently sat down with @spotlightonccs.bsky.social to discuss just that. Listen below. spotlightonccs.podbean.com/e/ep-19-adva...

Glad my statement is included in @politico.com's piece on proposed rule: "The proposed rule the Trump administration’s “most blatant attack to keep working class Americans and people of color from accessing higher education and a better life.”

Share my thoughts with @apnews.com about the Trump proposed rule to rescind 501c3 status of higher education institutions seeking to serve all students. It is the Trump admin's “most blatant attack to keep working class Americans and people of color from accessing higher education and a better life”

The Education Department seeks to stifle the freedom to teach, learn, and research through a process not often paid attention to: accreditation rule changes. As CEO and president Mike Gavin told @insidehighered.com: “defining academic freedom is a role the government should not take." Read more:

insidehighered.com3 Key Changes in Trump’s New Accreditation RuleThe administration accused accreditors of neglecting their “positions of public trust.”

Public comment on proposed rules for accreditation will be necessary to preserve free thought, and maintain the integrity of higher education. Check out @alliancehighered.bsky.social for tools and guidance.

The Education Department proposed changes to the accreditation system. Read the proposed rule and ask yourself: who really benefits when academic freedom is in the hands of political partisanship? Make your voice heard before the public comment period closes on Sept. 21:

Again, the very notion that these claims are made and then somehow needing verification a rhetorical strategy of the movement against black, brown, and LGBTQ people in and outside of academia. Over and again, lies become truth and truth does not matter even in death.

President Trump’s influence in sports and sporting events is anything but apolitical. Trump and his movement’s focus on sport of late seems to match the attacks on higher education, legal, media, voting, and other sectors than they do cultural debates. open.substack.com/pub/michaelh...
