Time for new paper mache projects! @chieflotsahair.bsky.social is running three races at the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend again this year, and her costumes require two hats. These are going to be somewhat smaller than things I’ve made previously, so I bought a wig head to build them on.

The 5k at the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is Aristocats themed this year. I'm hoping it's not too windy tomorrow, because Madame Adelaide Bonfamille's hat is not exactly aerodynamic.

Pretty happy with the progress considering I didn’t get to work on it until late. We could have ordered a hat, but I *made* this one, and it’s huge. Favorite detail so far is the little indentation in the crown, but I haven’t yet started on the accoutrements. This hat will have a lot of personality.

Making some progress on the second project. Most things are complete and just need a coat of Mod Podge before everything is assembled. The first project is partially painted but will probably remain under wraps until she wears them. This one will be Friday, the other will be Sunday.

We’ve had a couple of really pretty evenings so I’ve had the telescope out. Our closest galactic neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy, appears about six times the width of the moon in the night sky but is generally too dim to see with the naked eye. This photo is stacked from about eight hours of images.

This is my favorite stage of paper mache, after everything is finished and the first coat of Mod Podge has dried. It’s all shiny and all the colors are popping. Now I have to ruin it with some paint.

Started working on the second hat project, right now it isn’t much more than a paper mache fez and a cardboard disk laminated with some poster board to smooth out the cardboardiness. It’s not a sombrero. I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a sombrero.

Realized I hadn’t updated in a few days. So far none of the disasters have been show stopping! Working on some final details with paper clay. I’m getting close to paint, would really like to get that started tomorrow.

Today I discovered that I put this part on the wrong side of the hat! 🤦‍♀️ I carefully removed it and cleaned things up, and will mount it correctly tonight.

I did manage to recover it, but there were a lot of expletives involved and it’s a bit lumpier than before. It’ll be fine. It’ll be fine.

Moved on to the next step and have the pieces starting to merge together. I’m at the point where I’m going OH GOD OH GOD YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT THE OTHER WAY but we’re gonna push through.

Fun fact: When you build paper mache around a balloon, the balloon can really stick to the paper mache. When the balloon deflates, that stuck balloon will want to return to its original shape. When you add another layer, the underlying layers can get soft and implode like a billionaire’s sub.

Happy Halloween?

Second layer going down. I’m gonna do four layers and then once it’s dry we’ll pull it off the mannequin head to do a test fitting.

Test fitting went well so I moved on to the next step and covered a balloon in two layers of paper mache. That dried overnight and unfortunately the balloon deflated before I could add more layers. The paper mache mostly survived and it’ll have to do.

I received a pretty heinous phishing message this morning, I can see people going "fuck no we don't want to support a rapist what are you thinking!?" *click* before their brain actually kicks in. Came from legit SendGrid infrastructure too.

Yeah, it’s actually kind of nice this morning. It’ll suck before long, but at the moment it’s bearable.

Each year around this time in this place, there comes a morning when a cool breeze cuts the stultifying humidity. If you’re up early enough to enjoy it, you understand that although hot days lie ahead, summer will end. (And thank dog — summer in Florida sucks.) Today is that day.

I got the Covid vax + Flu vax double whammy today and while both arms are a bit angry at me and I suspect I’m gonna have a bit of a sleep-in tomorrow, it’s better than the fucking alternative!

I’d just like to mention how annoyed I am that I set up my telescope tonight with a single intent, to finally capture a Lunar X, to then find out a couple of hours later that my calculations were off and it wasn’t visible until the moon dropped below the horizon. I think my next option is November.

Hey, y’all check out the newest addition to my small collection of tiny art. This fantastic little guy, a Santa Virgínia Flea Toad, painted by the talented @thxnywy.art. Look at their little face, I love it.

Today is August 4, 2026 There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white; Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done, Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Finally had a clear night to test out some of the new features of my Seestar S50. My favorite is probably star removal, something I’ve tried and failed at in Siril several times now. Not sure if I’m ever gonna get bored of this thing.

Me, working on grocery list: "Does anyone have any dinner requests for this week?" Our seven-year-old, while eating leftover ramen from his favorite ramen place for breakfast: “We could have ramen.”

Driving through a neighborhood today and from the back seat the seven year old says “They still have a Trump sign on their tree… we should go cut that tree down.” My brain says “Yes! YES!” but my mouth says “nah, they’re allowed to have their own opinion, even if it’s one we don’t agree with”.

Dinosaur World in Plant City, FL is flying their flags at half staff to honor Sam Neill, and that’s the first social media post about him dying that actually made me tear up a bit.

Today I got to play the part of that annoying guy at the zoo who knows too much about that one specific animal. Yay!

I didn't see this post originally, but I opened by RSS reader today and there was a flood of QC comics! So happy the site is back up!
