This is a great explanation about why endowments cannot be used to cover the proposed reduction in indirect costs in medical research at Universities. Endowments have earmarks on them (can only be used for a declared use) and cannot be used on freely for any need at the university.🧪

🧪update on NIH indirect cost rates

Scott Delaney@scott-delaney.bsky.social

Surprise! Some good news in the NIH indirects case: Last month, the Court issued a prelim injunction blocking NIH from cutting NIH indirect cost rates. Today, NIH agreed that no other issues need to be litigated in the trial court. This means NIH's only remaining option in this case is an appeal.

The horror show continues at NIH I am hearing (reliably) that RIFs have started with entire institute Communication branches being terminated since their jobs not longer exist (reduction in force). But that is not all...

Hearing from all corners of HHS this morning about a total bloodletting — firings of scientists, analysts and many more as delayed RIFs take effect. Many folks didn’t see early AM email and showed up, only to be turned away when badges didn’t work. Was sent this photo of long lines at one HHS site.

NIH grant termination letters say researchers can appeal the decision to the agency director. But an NIH staffer tells me, "the language included in the terms of the terminated grants about the appeals process is CYA [to cover their asses] and any appeal will end up in the trash."

Hello Bluesky, especially #healthpolicy, #healthservicesresearch, #medsky & #publichealth folks! We're here to share the work of the 760+ @umich.edu faculty who belong to our institute, to help them reach broader audiences & have more impact. We'll also share our events & services for researchers.

When someone complains that the Dems aren't doing enough, tell them this. It is not the responsibility of the Dems to save us...it is ALL OF OUR RESPONSIBILITY. Stop complaining about others. Start with challenging your conservative and MAGA friends/family. STOP BEING POLITE AND START GETTING REAL.

Regarding the Dems flipping on the budget to avoid a shutdown. What flipped my opinion on this...If the dems vote no and shut down the govt, then Trump/Repubs will never reopen it. No govt is what they want. Dems will be blamed for destroying the govt. Only the Repubs in congress can reopen it.
