Just remembered the boy from school who on a school trip failed to finish a single whole croissant and was therefore mercilessly teased and known by some as Cwass for the remainder of his time there. Teenagers truly are odd/cruel.

Love a romance book. But been knocked out of one just now by an “English” character saying ‘a dime a dozen’. Just a Britpick I know, but a glaring one.

It’s nearly Halloween 🎃. That means this is your seasonal reminder for Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to switch over to the other screenwash. Nothing worse than a frozen skoosh tank. They’ve probably got pumpkin spice or cinnamon flavour so you can give your car 🚗 a treat.

I think there’s a new Temu scam that I haven’t figured out yet. Last few things I’ve bought a month later I’ve got a non-delivery notice offering a refund. But the things have been delivered. I’m assuming someone is reclaiming, but not sure how it works, or who is losing out.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to be travelling south. do do this in addition to the car and the ferry will have to make use of an absurd number of apps. Really this is something that could be improved by someone official just saying all social media info is HERE. (And having basic standards). 🧵 to follow

Please, can't someone just at least make all the councils use the same app. And make it an open one like telegram, or WhatsApp updates. Or even, gahsp, bluesky? Just when there's a storm slamming through. /endgrump.

Frosty morning. Cycling today wearing shorts. My primary school uniform was shorts for boys. All year round. I remember walking in sleet in shorts. Miserable. As a middle aged man my knees are so much less temperature sensitive. A brief lesson in who designs uniforms. (I’m not a fan of any).

Sometimes, it’s just laugh out loud funny how badly targeted “targeted advertising” can be. I’ve literally written and performed poems on people’s titles. As a #Quaker it’s genuinely hard to think of something that interests me less.

My health app, amongst many other things estimates what percentage protein I am. Just wondering if it’s actually monitoring that for future alien overlords trying to up their gains?

Filling this thread for next time someone asks me “why do you as an academic funder request CVs rather than rely on people’s web profile.”

John Bull@garius.eurosky.social

Whenever I chat to someone from another institution, I learn of another instance where the digital governance and/or accessibility audit process is: "but they're academics! We can trust whatever they do on the university website!" i don't even trust MYSELF. And I'm in charge of the fucking thing.

When I was an interviewer at an unnamed research company 20 years ago one of the most common questions we would get is “how did you get my number?” So many people struggled to understand an auto-dialer and that I had no idea what their number was.

They took it as a personal intrusion and could not understand that there are just a finite number of real phone numbers. Anyway I think of that when people talk about being targeted by companies online. How do they know that? I mean it’s quite possible they don’t and it just happens to fit you?

Face of a cat desperately hoping that there’s some spare lactose based breakfast. There is not. Sorry Morag, it’s peanut butter and toast today.

I thought the emergence of 'Black Friday' was bad in the UK anyway. This morning I've opened my work inbox, to half a dozen scam/spam/dodgy management training courses. Was there a button someone pressed all talking about their celebratory Black Friday sale? The scambots get stranger and stranger.

If you’re wondering where the productivity gain from consumer AI is- here’s my parable taken from life. I’m pretty sure someone uses an AI agent to book for my gym class. When a space opens up for a popular spin session everyone on the waiting list gets a notification through an app. 🧵 1/x

Soon most people will be doing this if it becomes the only way to get in. Will anyone have saved any time? Will the gym have to change their system? Maybe go to phone or paper/in person booking? 4/x

To me it’s all about relative individual gain. No net gain, and probably the local council (who own said gym) will have to pick up the bill to try and get around the bots 🤖 cluttering the system. Now think about the wider public sector and scale it up. 5/5

I often have my phone in my hand and take only moments to click to unlock it, open it, and click to accept the space. Probably 2 to 3 seconds from notification to click. Now it’s possible there are a bunch of people who are faster, on better network etc. but... 2/x

As a colleague at work pointed out- someone’s probably just using Claude. Have a bot 🤖 do it instantly and be sure to get the spot. So now I’m looking into this and getting a bot to do it for me. 3/x

Just listened to a podcast on an incredibly important subject but for which the interviewee had an almost comically boring voice. 25 minutes of "this is important - focus" battling in my consciousness with "but his vooooice isss sooo dullllll." Don't underestimate the importance of being engaging.

Someone somewhere must be sitting on a mountain of reusable water bottles. The water bottle cycle 🔁 I buy a reusable water 💧 bottle (for the environment). Said bottle disappears in mysterious circumstances. I buy a reusable water 💧 bottle. It’s baffling.

Feeling obliged to share my Amazon info. Devastating levels of detail. I feel seen as my local Gen zees would say. They know I drink coffee and probably have a washing machine.

Every time I see the word broligarch I think some words truly should never be spoken. In this case it's because bro and oligarch don't us the same letter o.

Morag’s been howling for minutes because Teddy (the neighbours cat) is in the front garden. Not inside. Not stealing her food. Just sitting on the lawn. #cat

Ordered a book which will be coming from the US at some point. It feels like an adventure. Will it arrive? Will there a be a tariff randomly added? How long will it take to get here? All the thrills of being a C18th merchant wil a slightly lower chance of dying from plague.

Ahm no' a grass.

It was #quaker week this week and we were absolutely overwhelmed to have a new face at meeting today. We celebrated by not having any heating and having everyone in coats and nearly able to see their own breath. Hope yours was as good.

Also on the is this #pie #quaker? question. Pork and egg pie. Limited overall score given the volume of pork. However an unending egg is an appealing idea. Where does it begin, when does it end, are we all in some sense egg? Good to fair Quaker score. www.marksandspencer.com/food/british...

Neat little image from meteoblue showing what kind of climate we had in Europe this summer. London had the summer that you used to expect in Portugal. Paris on the south coast of Spain. #climate #change.

On principle I’m not watching your podcast. In much the same way that I don’t go to the National portrait gallery to listen to the pictures.

Fascinated by this picture on Sky News site. I’ve been to many petrol pumps over the years. But never, I think, rainbow 🌈 pumps. I’m guessing this is where the people who have “powered by pixie dust” bumper stickers fill up?
