This book was so much fun! Highly recommend it!

The happiest of book birthdays to The Killing of a Chestnut Tree by @oliverklangmead.bsky.social, the start of a new mystery series! 🌳 Meet Havelock Harper, gentleman detective. Dapper, delightful, and decidedly queer, he's here to solve your most magical mysteries.

Some of mine: Dead Man's Bones self-titled album, Love Me Dead by Ludo (or really most of You're Awful, I Love You), Killer by Phoebe Bridgers, Baby You're a Haunted House by Gerard Way, Zombie Killer by Leslie & the Ly's, and Kraken by Florence + The Machine.

Dropped a 7lb bag of ice on my foot. From three feet up. Really hoping it’s not broken, I’ve got plans up in Madison this weekend!

Cake was a hit! Nailed the flavor combo - not too tart and not too sweet. My Dad (a famous cake hater) ate an entire piece!

Because someone is going to ask - yes we’ve covered She Who Shall Not Be Named’s shitty use of her wealth, but she’s 11 and it’s the first book series she’s really gotten into so she doesn’t quite get the impact of buying merch. I’m crafting or etsying as much as I can to mitigate it. 🤷‍♀️

Officially hit the time of year where it’s still hot enough during the day that I need the AC upstairs but cold enough at night that I need a space heater. Old houses!

Love customers trying to pull a gotcha on price differences. This customer asked me to quote a standard piece of tooling two weeks ago. Today they asked for it modified for their specific machine. I'm not pulling a fast one, you asked the manufacturer to do custom work and they have to pay for that!

You are a machine shop! You know the costs of making and confirming the drawing and doing the modifications! It quite literally works out to a reasonable hourly amount for the industry, not even up charging! I already agreed to give you a 10% quantity discount! Why are you like this!

Car started screaming at me. Hoping it’s just the brakes (they’re due), but yikes. Last week the garage door broke. Tuesday the cistern pump broke. Now my car. Going to reconsider the existence of curses if anything else breaks!

Sounds like the definitive Thanksgiving trip itinerary will be Home -> Memphis for 2 nights -> New Orleans for 2 nights -> San Marcos (via Houston) for 5 nights -> Springfield, MO -> home.

Excited to be back in Memphis and determined to find actual good bbq. I can’t keep saying my favorite Memphis style rib place is in Nashville, surely that can’t be the best one.

Also maybe I will try to actually go somewhere in San Marcos this time. Feels like I’ve been all over the area but never in the actual city!

We've gotta learn to believe these authoritarians are who they say they are the first time they tell us. Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's home this morning. Her office says, "The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong." Here are some things I'm not seeing enough of in our online chatter. 🧵

I finished the scarf for my niece’s birthday! Way more ambitious of a project than I thought it was going to be. But it’s done!

Going to New Orleans for the first time during our annual Thanksgiving trip! Any tips or recommendations are welcome, especially must hit food spots.

Regretting looking at my calendar now. What do you mean my niece has a dance performance tomorrow at 11:15, littlest nephew’s T-ball game is at 11, middle nephew’s baseball game is 11:30, and oldest nephew’s is at 12. Yikes.

Went to call my hairstylist for a bang trim and thought I should check my calendar for when my next appointment is first. It’s today. Glad I checked!

Glad Elizabeth Warren is on this.

NEW: Big Tech companies reveal to Congress they expect YOU to keep subsidizing their data centers. AND they’ll keep using NDAs to keep the public in the dark. I’m not letting them get away with it.

Got our first bizarro encounter due to AI this week at work. Had a company reach out and set up a meeting, then they wanted a manufacturer we don’t carry in a state we don’t cover. ChatGPT told them we were the EDM experts and they didn’t bother to look at what we actually sell and where.

Has AI cooked so many people’s brains that they don’t know how to go to a website anymore? I assure you we come up first on web searches for our name and all that info is on the website. Instead they wasted everyone’s time, including their own, then were annoyed with us about it!

Big day today - we're getting a brand new no one hit it and it won't rise crooked garage door! Really glad the guys my landlord hired got here early and agreed that a whole door replacement was the way to go. They also got them to buy a new opening mechanism so all my garage door problems are solved

I also figured out, 18 months into living here, how to get the upper half of the windows opened and got two of the grossest ones cleaned. Very productive WFH day 😂

Also re: cakes - my SIL has asked me to make a red velvet for her birthday (same weekend as the neice’s), anyone have a good go to recipe for that? She loves super sweet cakes.

Cake attempt two. Just filled it with raspberry preserves and made lemon American buttercream. I know the strawberry jam and strawberry powder in the frosting worked so I’m saving those for the final cake. Hoping this sponge is better, cross your fingers for me.

Finished the test cake for niece’s birthday. The sponge is a little over baked and I’m not sold on the hybrid buttercream, but overall I think it turned out well!

Okay sponge is waaay over baked lol. It also definitely needs a sweeter frosting so I’ll make a regular American buttercream for her actual birthday cake. I do like the strawberry jam under fresh chopped strawberries as the filling so I’ll keep that. This is why I do a trial run!

Well except that one time my nephew requested a captain crunch cake a week before his birthday. Turned out well but I definitely winged it!

It’s not even the oven’s fault this time, I was baking during the Penguins game and the timer went off in the last three minutes of play and I simply didn’t hear it. The end of that game was intense!

Officially gave up on Barnes & Noble ever getting the Lego Jurassic Park T Rex Skeleton back in stock. Bought the new Lego bookstore book nook and when I finish that I have enough left over to buy the Jurassic Park Triceratops Skeleton. I'll get the T Rex direct from Lego after the holidays.

It's going to cost $25 extra to get it from Lego, which is why I held out hope for so long. But I've been trying since MAY and they haven't had it in stock once, so I think Barnes & Noble isn't going to restock it. Maybe for Christmas, but I think four months of trying is enough for me to call it.

Anyway, getting ready to go to my second funeral in two and a half weeks. This is how you know you're getting old. Instead of having a lot of weddings and baby showers to attend, you start going to the funerals of your friends' parents.

Someday I will figure out how to make my hair look good while curly, but I fear that today is once again not that day.

Not surprised by this at all. All of my customers who are buying equipment right now are almost exclusively building things for data centers. Every other industry has fallen off a cliff. Used to be 80% auto, medical, and aerospace.

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say
