There are a vast number of things I don’t understand about Trump’s handling of this war, or excursion, whatever you want to call it. Rubio is Secretary of State. He has ( I assume) the entire diplomatic corps of the most powerful nation on earth at his disposal.

This includes, presumably, Farsi speaking experts on Iran, with vast knowledge of their culture and history. This being the case, why aren’t the negotiations being led by experienced diplomats, instead of some Real Estate guys?

European countries view Putin’s threats differently. Among those that take his threats seriously are Poland, Finland, the Baltic States, Sweden, Czech Republic, and Italy. Militarily these countries combined are a match for anything Russia has put on the field in Ukraine.

If Ukraine could negotiate a mutual defense treaty with these countries ( potentially adding France and UK for nuclear deterrence) they could command respect at the negotiating table with Putin. US not needed.
