The Bank of Canada raised rates by 25bp to 2.5%, and indicated more hikes could be needed. BoC raised its expectation for inflation sharply to 3.1% in 2027 and not returning to 2% target until mid-2028. Canadian stocks and currency little changed at the open. www.bankofcanada.ca/2026/10/fad-...
To follow up on Semis, our data on analyst EPS estimate revisions shows the pace of EPS increases vs decreases coming down from its historically high levels after extreme upward moves in Q1 and Q2 earnings. Expectations are now *very* high and seem to have passed the "second derivative" peak.
Interesting point from @followtheh.bsky.social about the losing streak for the SOX. As the poster child industry for "selling picks and shovels to gold miners" in AI, the selling in Semis since the peak in June, despite continued solid reported earnings, is concerning for leadership/sentiment.

at the open $SOX lower for 8th straight day would be longest losing streak since 2008
This likely is a meaningful part of the "vibecession" issue. Perception of inflation's impact is much higher now than actual inflation is, making consumer sentiment much worse than the overall macro data would support. That said, consumer sentiment surveys are very messy nowadays.
RBADVISERS: “.. Consumers believe inflation is hurting them more than during the late-1970s. How long can this go on before it starts encouraging higher wage demands?” #UMich
Seems like some differences in views being expressed between Fed officials today, with Williams on the tape saying no rate hikes needed in 2027, while Goolsbee highlights inflation risks from AI, tariffs, oil etc. Market shows 1 hike priced in this year, 2 more next year.
“It takes a long time for overheated demand to get going, and once it’s going, it’s hard to get rid of. That’s why the conventional wisdom has been if you see overheating demand, you act decisively and quickly to prevent it from rolling into inflation expectations.” www.reuters.com/business/goo...
Been making the point to clients lately that while consumer spending has indeed held up much better than many expected, but profits for many consumer-facing companies are not great due to higher costs, Delta being an example today.

Stocks, and particularly Semis/AI names, got a bit of jolt from some headlines about OpenAI. Per Bloomberg, OpenAI's revenue projections are lower than what some had assumed ($50B annualized vs ~$70B) And Google has a new Gemini agent for the workplace, adding to competition in that space.
