A game programmer for 20+ years, but my day job is fiber network design. Feel free to talk to me about anything. I am into game development, music, reading and politics. My current games are Factorio (Pyanodon's mod), Far Cry 4 & GemCraft Frostborn Wrath

Regarding Trump's deal with Russia to buy their diesel, I just realized something: Russia is only sending a days' supply because it DOESN'T HAVE any more oil to send us! Most of their production facilities have been destroyed by Ukraine

I had an idea for a Halloween costume Take two pair of jeans. Cut the leg off one, sew it onto the other. Go around being distraught that you lost your 3rd leg, as though everyone has 3 legs. Would it work? Maybe it'll be fun, I don't know

Last night I turned down a #gamedev opportunity to work with an artist. He let it slip early that he was transphobic, and wouldn't put up with any discussion about it. Probably a good call on my part, but... could really use an artist to work with.

NO media 1000s are marching in DC to defend voting rights; 90 orgs signed on, Reuters sent photographers, but local media Bernie Sanders, AOC and Martin Luther King III attended Wa Post buried it A Black-led march is visible in DC only after somebody else reports it Repost the march they buried

I saged my house today People don't get how & especially why one would sage a house How: Find a branch with a lot of leaves & a long stem. Cut it & slide it along the edges & corners of your ceiling. Why: It cleans the cobwebs! Leaves are good at collecting them. You can toss the stick when done ->

I'm still working to get height mapping working in my #gamedev project Settlers & Warlords. But I've just realized something: this won't work for swamp biomes, or ocean biomes. Guess I'll worry about that later. I'll finish getting this heightmap system working. Players can deal with swamps on hills

At last, I finally have heightmap data generating in my #gamedev project Settlers & Warlords. Now I need to apply it to the actual game. Which is going to be hard. Right now, a player's position is decided before the map is generated. I'll have to generate the map before I can place the player now

I'm seeing #teachers with kids who have never learned how to read, or they struggle with math; and I think I know why. Hooked on Phonics was such a big success with schools, and businesses found an opportunity to sell new curriculum to school administrators for big bucks. All you had to do was ->

convince the admins that your curriculum was better. But the admins aren't experts, the methods aren't proven beyond "their experts", and admins don't want to leave kids behind when this new plan "could work". The businesses don't care about any of that. They just want to make a buck.

Doing #gamedev to try & get heightmaps in my game Settlers & Warlords. This is using a Diamond-Square algorithm. It's not associated with my game, but with this much working, I can apply it to my game

This week in #gamedev I've been working on a structure that lets players to dig through rocks. Now that it's outputting items, I need to add a wooden crane, to get the boulders out (they'll be too big to move by hand). I gotta decide if a pivot point can be made out of sticks... or just go with it

We're cooking meats, now! This is from my #gamedev project Settlers & Warlords, a game similar to both Factorio and Dwarf Fortress. Players start out with 4 workers, a bunch of land, and nothing else, climbing a robust tech tree and interacting with a fantasy world. Hunting allows access to ->

new food sources (beyond what can be foraged around you), which is the first requirement for increasing population. With fires now working, my next objective is to apply this to a mining structure, called a Fire Miner. How do you mine through solid rock without a pickaxe? Heat rocks with a fire ->

until they're really hot, the douse it with water. The thermal shock causes the rocks to crack, getting you just a little deeper. Mining this way will be tedious and dangerous... but possible. Should be fun!

Oh, of course Trump would pay for this by cutting aids to poor families. Trump doesn't understand what people do when they have no legal options to feed themselves

I've had a copy of Doom II for ages, but I've only recently got a chance to play The Plutonia Experiment (it can be played as a mod, with the help of UZ Doom). Plutonia just... hits different than Doom II. Levels are built to place monsters where they cause the most pain, while preventing you ->

from easily returning fire. Every treasure has an ambush before, during and/or after taking it. Shelter points are harder to come by. Staying alive is much harder in this game - but it's more fun because of it. I especially enjoyed the map Hunted, where there's a dozen Archviles in a maze of a ->

Ouch... So, in my #gamedev of Settlers & Warlords, I'm trying to set up a Hunting Post, so workers can take a spear and hike into the wilderness & try to catch something to eat. Here is what the post looks like. The plan is to pick a point 100 tiles away from the building, plot a path there, ->

then the worker returns (with 50% chance of having caught something). I have a nice function called pathTo() that can generate a path, and will even search beyond the loaded map by querying in content. Come to find out... it's not working. Map content loads through other methods just fine, though.->

Only, that is using a system of functions that is much more managed, and now... it's been so long since I worked on it, I'm not sure how it works anymore. Guess I'll have to figure out what I did previously that was effective, and go from there.

I think there are far too many people who don't understand this part (#2). You can whine & complain all day about businesses raising prices and lowering quality in their product. But IF YOU STILL BUY IT, your complaints mean nothing because they're still making money off you. #corporategreed

Sverre Auestad 📎@sverre-auestad.bsky.social

Two things: 1: I agree. They should offer a physical copy. 2: Will you actually be principled enough to *not* buy the game if they don't? Or will you complain and then buy it anyway, thus encouraging the company to continue this shitty practice since they're not losing money because of it?

I think I've realized something: I'm trying to take over the world. But I can't take over this world, it's too hard. Instead, I'm making my own world in a game, with as much detail as I can muster - and then I'll take it over. In #gamedev you can do that

Seriously; all it would take is for Trump to actually listen to someone who's an expert on the subject. But no. That's too much for Trump. It would make him look weak to follow someone else's advice. So now he's guaranteed to look weak by having no way to fix the Reflecting Pool, a mess he caused

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

The Reflecting Pool should be left in shambles as a reminder of his failed presidency. He should never be allowed to touch anything else in DC again. Let the next president fix it properly.

I'm starting to think the whole purpose of the Iran war was to drain America's Strategic Oil Reserves. Trump couldn't get his hands on it directly, so he had to force us to use it

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

March 9: "We're now totally independent of the Middle East. We don't need their oil." April 1: "It doesn't really affect us. We have so much oil, much more than we need." June 17: If I didn't agree to the MOU, we "would run out of reserves at about 4 weeks..."

At last, I can finally dry clay bricks under a Thatch Roof! Now we can... umm.. well, maybe work on hunting? That's not related to clay, tho. I need mining, so I need to dig through dirt... and mapping out ores is hard, so I'm still avoiding it. But... Guess this is what happens in #gamedev

Well, that was an easy fix. Turns out I had already planned to manage structure IDs, I even had a field in the database for it. I just hadn't... applied it yet. #gamedev bsky.app/profile/mind...

I'm making good #gamedev progress with my Settlers & Warlords game. But I have been waiting for my workers to send items to a new structure, but they never do. The game even gives me a reason: the structure doesn't need any items to work. But that's not right. It's also referencing the wrong ->

the ID that the Item Mover is holding, so why is it picking the wrong structure? It turns out there are TWO structures with id=43. I use a lastStructureId to help determine what ID to use next. When I refresh the page (and load a fresh copy of the game from the server), the lastStructureId ->

structure name (it should be Farmer's Post, not Item Mover). Why is it getting the name wrong? The Item Mover (that's responsible for giving items to the Farmer's Post) stores the structure as only its ID (it's easier to store & fetch that way), and the ID of the Farmer's Post is 43. This is ->

I was listening to a song today (A Lifetime Rolls By by annasara Rework - give it a listen if you can), and got thinking: In this country we've had millions of people go thru college, invest their time and savings to get a degree. Only to graduate and discover the job markets they're skilled in ->

we could do! We could have cured cancer by now. We could have self-driving cars that were actually reliable. We could be using new forms of metals and energy storage that opens new possibilities. We could be exploring the stars by now. Our government invested in our higher education, but only ->

halfway. And now, all that investment is gone; wasted by the years of lack of use. Because the crafters of this investment only cared about making more money in a capitalist system. I'm sick of it.

is already saturated with so many qualified people, that they can't get a job anywhere. We should all be furious, because what the hell are we even doing? The government made it possible for us all to gain lucrative skills in high-level fields... and dumped us into a business market that had no ->

need for those skills. And now, entire generations that have those skills are letting them waste away, because they can't help us in our own lives. We need to re-think how our government handles college graduates. We should be applying those graduates to projects large & small. Just imagine what ->

I think the biggest issue we had as a country was that once politicians got into office, we had no way to remove them until the next election cycle. They can go 4 to 6 years working against every promise they made when campaigning, lining their own pockets, and all we can do is vote in someone new.

Sadly, every word is true. The American experiment is over. Killed in the middle of Fifth Avenue and no one in power blinked an eye to stop it.

I finally fixed my Blender issues late last night & was looking forward to getting home & do more #gamedev on my Settlers & Warlords. I only had to export the model to .gltf format so I can use it in Javascript. Simple... but it doesn't work. All I can determine is my Blender version needs ->

updating (but is the only version that doesn't randomly close while trying to render). I tried an online converter app but the result doesn't seem to load anywhere. I'm stuck... again. And sad and frustrated. Would anyone be able to try & export the file on their end?
