16 years ago today, LEGO Universe launched. Since the early 2000s, the LEGO Group had wanted to create a digital experience featuring LEGO bricks. Early concepts were pitched to the company multiple times with little success...

...until LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game became a hit and renewed their interest. When it came to its trailer, the team knew they wanted a well-known voice, even going to suggest Morgan Freeman, but Patrick Steward was picked in the end.

13 years ago today, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes released. When it came to making sure all characters were accurately represented, TT Games created a spreadsheet listing all of their abilities, which would then go through Disney's legal and creative team.

Notably, Stan Lee didn't just record voicelines for his character but also a spoof of the classic Spider-Man theme titled "Spider-Stan" for the credits, though it was later cut due to being unable to acquire the rights to the original.

Eight years ago today, LEGO DC Super Villains released. Due to the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike of the time, many iconic voice actors reprised their roles in this game, including Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as The Joker and Tara Strong as Harley Quinn.

Four years ago today, LEGO Bricktales released. At the time, developer ClockStone was known for their Bridge Constructor series. However, when the LEGO Group reached out, they didn't just want a LEGO Bridge Constructor game, leading to the creation of an original title.

23 years ago today, BIONICLE released. Originally, the team focused on making recreations of the physical sets, but those ended up being scrapped due to not looking like video game characters. Instead, new designs were made with inspiration taken from the films, sets and comics.

Interestingly enough, you can access a hidden debug menu by modifying the game's executable, allowing you to use a level selection screen as well as enable cheats.

The final batch of quests has arrived to LEGO Fortnite Odyssey's Knight Shift event, allowing you to not just recruit Batman as a villager, but also earn some Gotham City decor items!

Seven years ago today, LEGO DUPLO World released. When the LEGO Group first reached out to developer StoryToys, they had a hard challenge: to create a play experience based on a blurry image of an unannounced set within six weeks. They thankfully succeeded.

However, when it first released, it wasn't highlighted in the app stores or big review websites, causing it to be the worst launch for the company. Its CEO even considered leaving the industry but, just a few weeks later, it started taking off, just in time for the holiday season.

We're still very early into this merger and any news of cancellations, layoffs or closures are likely to be weeks if not months away, though I am hopeful about TT Games' future following the success of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

So far, there's been very little news on the gaming side of both companies, but we do know that Warner Bros. Games, owner and publisher of LEGO game developer TT Games, will be merging with Paramount Games Studio.

Two new LEGO Batman sets have been announced to be coming next year that feature tie-in rewards for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight: the Batman Returns and Arkham Batmobiles, both of which unlock the Golden Red Brick in-game!

Did you know that not all versions of LEGO City Undercover are the same?  Originally, the game was an exclusive for the Nintendo Wii U. Because of this, it was filled with tons of easter eggs and references to various Nintendo franchises.

However, when the game launched on other consoles a little over four years later, these were all removed except for the Nintendo Switch version. But, now, with the help of a mod, these easter eggs can be added back to the PC version. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/oOg211DHgEc

27 years ago this month, LEGO Friends released. The game was created out of an attempt by the LEGO Group to research if there was a market for video games aimed at teenage girls.

Several activities were planned, though some ended up being cut to not bloat the game, like house customization and dog training. 13 years later, the LEGO Friends theme would launch with its own game also titled "LEGO Friends", though it's unknown if it took any inspiration from the original.

One year ago today, LEGO Party! released. Around 250 minigames were prototyped during its development, with the ones able to have a title featuring a pun usually being selected.

11 years ago today, LEGO Dimensions released. TT Games had always struggled with getting license-holders to agree to a game mixing multiple IPs, especially with the lack of paid DLCs at the time. However, the success of The LEGO Movie as well as the arrival of toys-to-life changed this.

Originally, the villains in the story would have been the original brick-built LEGO family from 1974, angry that they had been replaced with minifigures in later sets.

29 years ago today, LEGO Island released. The game is actually heavily based on the multiple intelligence theory, with players being able to switch between characters that embody unique abilities like mathematics, music and coordination.

Developer Mindscape had originally planned multiple sequels, but the company firing their employees so they didn’t have to pay bonuses led the LEGO Group to revoke their license and have another company handle them.

26 years ago today, LEGO Stunt Rally released. Originally, the game offered free-roam racing, but young players frequently getting lost after going off-road lead to the vehicles being put on rails, though this functionality can still be re-enabled using console commands.

The winning designs from LEGO Ideas' Batmobile contest has been added to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight! Have you spotted them yet? 👀

18 years ago today, LEGO Batman: The Video Game released. Due to the 90s films and Dark Knight Trilogy being considered too dark for the target audience, TT Games instead opted to create an original story with a focus on which environments to portray, like abandoned fairgrounds.

Notably, six months into development, most of the team was moved to work on LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. Once they managed to get that out in time for the film, they returned, having learned new techniques.

Nine years ago today, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game released. As it was the first LEGO game to not release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, several improvements were made to its graphics, lightning and performance, like allowing for more enemies to be on the screen at once.

It notably features a character exclusive to those who purchased the original film on home media but, as this promotion has since ended, you'd have no way of knowing the cheat code "D9TZ39".

26 years ago today, LEGO Alpha Team released. The earliest concept for the game was that basic household objects, like dog bowls and toasters, were actually secretly powered by incredibly complicated contraptions controlled by minifigures.
