Tilo Jung@tilojung.bsky.social

In Austria, we say „wenn‘s laaft, dann laaft’s” – when it rains, it pours, but in a good way 😉 Another paper is out, this time in Ecological Economics with two of our amazing MA students at @ifso.bsky.social, Marla Feldwisch and Bruno Brinkmeier, on “Private wealth ownership and emissions”. 1/

Of course, these results are not definite since the field is in its infancy and we had to make a number of simplifying assumptions. However, they are based on survey data (SOEP) and thus most likely even underestimate the wealth share held by the rich. 5/

In our view, these results make the argument for holding the wealthiest more responsible for reducing emissions. There are many ways of doing so (and many intelligent minds have thought about this), but this is for another paper 😊 /end

Incredibly, emissions from wealth are even more concentrated than wealth itself, which is already extremely unequally distributed. The top 10% are responsible for 66% of emissions while they hold 62% of wealth. In levels, I find the picture astounding: 3/

If we permit emissions intensity to vary by sector, then they show a broad band, but random portfolio allocation using bootstrapping finds a share of the top 10% in emissions of 66.5%:This bolsters our confidence in the findings. 4/

However, both corner solutions are possible, if unplausible, outcomes of our model: the euthanasia of the rentier (Samuelson and Modigliani 1966) and the triumph of the rentier (Darity 1981).

I like many things about this paper. (How often will I find time to work on modelling papers?) But what I probably enjoy most is that it contributes, however little, to the historical debates that took place between Post-Keynesians and Neoclassicals in journals such as AER, QJE, and REStud.

We show that a stable interior solution – a so-called Pasinetti equilibrium after the brilliant Post-Keynesian Luigi Pasinetti and my late professor at the New School, Lance Taylor – is the most likely outcome in a stock-flow consistent Post-Keynesian model with endogenous wealth accumulation

This is a paper that had a longer journey until it saw the light of day. Mostly I end up loathing those (and some I leave to perish in peace), but a few grow dearer over time, and this one is such a case 🥰

Interpretations are of course up to debate, but my personal view is that social norms around housework division are alive and kicking. Remember: we are not looking at child care, but at routine chores like cooking, cleaning etc. that many may perceive as tedious on a daily basis.

We show how routine housework (e.g. cooking, cleaning, shopping) changes for women and men around four life events in Germany: moving in together, marriage, first birth, and divorce. Using SOEP data and event-study methods, we find that:

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

I'm excited about my talk tomorrow at the University of Cologne, organized by the pluralist economics students. We will discuss how inequality and climate change are linked, and what can be done about it.
