Writing about civics and government; making things; dad & husband. Working with my brother on a documentary about American teachers. Yes, I did write all those Crashcourse history videos for John Green.

Saka, Rice, Konsa, Eze, White, Madueke, Lewis-Skelly, (potentially) Dowman. That’s a lot of England players in the Arsenal squad. For England’s sake, Bellingham to Arsenal is a no-brainer.

Brought my oldest child to vote on the first day of early voting. Poll workers announced that they were a first time voter and the polling station erupted in applause. Democracy rocks.

In honor of John Dewey and his often-impenetrable prose, I’m going to say this: Democracy Begins at School (Which is why authoritarians hate any schooling they can’t control)

I suspect that part of what's behind the GOP's trans panic strategy is that they believe gender affirming care, especially surgery, will be straw that breaks the Medicare for All camel's back.

More on the Musk doc. There’s really only one scene in the film that stuck with me, an interview towards the end where Musk can’t answer the question of why he thinks a.i. super intelligence is a good thing. It exposes him for all his emptiness. The vast majority of interviewees speaking against

Him are women, and that is almost certainly no accident. The use of a.i. in producing an Elon avatar is quite troubling, because although it plays into Elon’s conceit that we are living in a simulation to make it ridiculous, it also made me question how much of what I was seeing was genuine.

It’s rarely a good thing when a documentary foregrounds its artifice in this way. Final (for now) thought: the greatest service the film does is to reveal that Musk’s highest skill is in selling the story of himself. Increasingly that is true for the rest of us, too.

“Flight Without End” is one banger sentence after another. Example: “I have no pangs of conscience as regards my indolence, it is just that my indolence brings in no money whereas the indolence of everyone else is well remunerated.”

So, I saw the Musk documentary ... it should be a series rather than a single film. Some of the stories are compelling -- the Tesla autopilot lawsuits, the DOGE fiasco -- but others aren't, perhaps because it's hard to tell a story of financial shenanigans when they are this complicated.

This NYT article is going to get a lot of attention, so here is my two cents: It should not surprise anyone that student achievement has declined since students are now asked to do much more in the same amount of time (or less). Consider how much more time it takes to use a computer than a pencil,

or to build a lesson, unit or full curriculum around research projects when research will likely consist of hunting for information on the vast open system that is the internet. Technology (which is also expensive) allows us to produce more, faster, but it also makes more work for everyone.

Take of the Day #2: Any education reform needs to start with doubling the number of teachers so that class size is 16-18 and each MS/HS teacher is responsible for 90 students MAX (+ pay them MIN $75K).That’s what rich people in cities like NYC are paying $75K per year for and what all kids deserve.

Take of the day #1: Billionaires pushing a.i. wake up every day knowing that nothing they do matters. Their money will keep growing regardless of their actions, they don’t help people, they don’t make anything useful. They want the rest of us to feel as empty and meaningless as they feel.

Apropos of nothing in today’s news, it’s ok to forbid certain purchases and sales. You can’t buy or sell organs, or children, or certain drugs or weapons no matter how much money you have or what your politics are. Some prohibitions are good.

Happy Labor Day! If you find yourself tempted to complain about the job protections, wages, and benefits of unionized workers, take a breath and ask yourself, "Why don't I have those benefits, too?"

"If I can pay for it I should have it" and "If I don't wan't to pay for it I shouldn't have to" are two sides of the same coin and that coin is the currency of the GOP realm.

I'm definitely not watching a speech by an addled dimwit who presided over the beginning of an epidemic that nearly killed him, passed massive tax give away to the rich and repeatedly blamed everything on his predecessor tell me that the ONLY reason he lost an election SIX YEARS ago was fraud.

I know it’s my Arsenal bias, but why not bring on Saka after the goal? He’s a better defender than Rogers who was moved to the left anyway. Too many center backs and not enough players defending at the top of the box where the danger came from.

The U.S. celebrates independence on the wrong day. It should be celebrated on September 3, the date that the Treaty of Paris was signed. If the colonists had lost the war, the Declaration of Independence would be a footnote, and the U.S. would be Canada.
