Come to our Zoom webinar on Friday (10/23, 11:30 to 1:30 pm ET, DM me for details, not posting publicly for security reasons)
Very excited that *Methods in the Philosophy of Science: A User's Guide* is now available open access! Lucas and I have a chapter in it on "Doing Public Engagement with Science as a Philosopher of Science" #philsci#scicomm. In our chapter we ...
Methods in the Philosophy of Science: A User's Guide, edited by the inestimable @phieveigl.bsky.social (and me!), has 27 chapters from super-cool philosophers of science explaining how they do their thing, and is now open access! Our baby is free! #philscidirect.mit.edu/books/oa-edi...
We conclude by thinking through what #philsci might specifically offer the public engagement w/ science space. We think we do have something to offer, and it comes in the form of content and skills. Thanks having us be a part @adrian-currie.bsky.social and @phieveigl.bsky.social

I was at a workshop last week (by @alyssaemery.bsky.social) on time poverty. One idea discussed was @brigidschulte.bsky.social's "time confetti", fragmented scraps of time between tasks too small for deep work, too frequent to ignore. I've been thinking a lot about this the past week, and...
when you unexpectedly open a greeting card, or you reach into your kid's backpack, and .... Surprise! Glitter! Glitter from the art or a card is now all over your floor. You didn't ask for that glitter! You weren't planning on SO.MUCH.GLITTER. But now, here it is. And you have to deal with it.
So much time and energy goes into dealing with glitter. Much like in crafting glitter is the perfect sparkly nuisance, so too emails in professional life.

I've been thinking about how email is the "time glitter" of academic life. It gets absolutely everywhere, following you around, something you end up encountering all day. And it's nearly impossible to clean up (get an inbox 0). And...
Just when you think you've gotten it off all the surfaces and your hands (emails relied, tasks off your to-do list), it somehow it turns back up (replies, follow-ups). But the worst is...

We invite applications from those with a recent PhD in any academic discipline with an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrated experience in one or another aspect of public engagement with science.

Yet another act of anticipatory obedience.
The '27 budget is a *request* from the president. Congress can appropriate more $ to NSF (including SBE) if it wants.
In fact... a bipartisan majority JUST rebuked POTUS' deep cuts to science funding a couple months ago!
This is only over if we let it.
I am shocked to see this language from the NSF.
“The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects.”
This is a cataclysm for social science in the United States. SBE helped to foster the field of Science and Technology Studies in the country (it supported the development of #STS training programs at UCSD and my alma mater, Cornell, in the 1990s).
Unfortunately, Vannevar Bush would love this part.
BREAKING: In response to huge cuts in Trump's budget request, NSF is shuttering its SBE directorate. Staff will be transferred to other parts of the agency and "grants that align with Administration priorities" will be maintained.
That & more w/ @maxkozlov.bsky.social & @edwrdchen.bsky.social

Physicists will spend $10 billion on a particle accelerator to understand why there is an "unnatural" hierarchy between the Planck scale and the weak scale, then insist that philosophy has no role and we should shut up and calculate.
Today in #PhilosophyOfCosmology we talked about fine-tuning and naturalness, and introduced inflation and eternal inflation.
So many juicy philosophical questions that physicists don't take as seriously as they should! What does it mean for parameters/initial conditions to be "unnatural," anyway?

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.
WHAT, WHAT, WHAT ARE WE DOING!!!

🗣️REMINDER: Trump and Republicans are still trying to pass their 3 TRILLION dollar spending bill that would kick 16 million people off of their health insurance and literally take lunches away from school children.
We can’t let them get away with it.
