In this paper, we went beyond cross disciplinary citations and author composition, and looked at the way authors actually engaged with prior work from other disciplines. Come talk to Bagyasree! She's also looking to start a PhD in Fall 2027!

Bagyasree Sudharsan@bagyasree.bsky.social

I'm presenting a paper on measuring article engagement with interdisciplinary citations, co-authored with Alex Leto and @mlpacheco.bsky.social at #EMNLP2026! Come discuss the science of science and measuring abstract concepts in discourse! arxiv.org/pdf/2601.17020 Poster in Hall H at 11, Oct 27.

I'm not at #EMNLP2026 this year, but some of our students and faculty are! check out the work from our group!

Boulder NLP@bouldernlp.bsky.social

Boulder NLP has multiple papers accepted to #EMNLP2026 across the main conference, findings and workshops! 🚀 We'll be presenting work on morphology, narratives, science of science, CSS, audio LMs, knowledge graphs, fairness/bias/trustworthiness, and more. See you in Budapest! 🇭🇺 🏰 🚋

I'll be presenting our work on characterizing the narrative content of web-scale data at #EMNLP2026! @andrewpiper.bsky.social @elliottash.bsky.social ash.bsky.social @mariaa.bsky.social @emnlpmeeting.bsky.social Would love to see you there! 📍 Hall H, Poster Session F 🕘 Tue Oct 27, 9:00-10:30

Not at COLM, but these students are! Come talk to them!

Boulder NLP@bouldernlp.bsky.social

Boulder NLP is heading to COLM with new work on human-chatbot interaction, translationese, and data mixing for pretraining. See you in San Francisco! 🌉 🚋 🍞

I need *several* emergency reviewers on on mech interp for NLP. I also need emergency reviewers for papers on neuro-symbolic language reasoning, for a paper extracting symbolic structures from text, and for a paper on knowledge collapse in LLMs. Many missing reviews this cycle

I'll be at #ACL2026 starting this afternoon, let me know if you'd like to catch up. Check out all the work to be presented by our students in the next few days ⬇️

Boulder NLP@bouldernlp.bsky.social

Recent earthquakes in northern Venezuela have caused an emergency the country is not equipped to handle. The state has lagged behind and citizens have been self-organizing. @caracaschronicles.tierra-de-gracia.com collected a list of trustworthy organizations to donate to if you are wanting to help:

Welp, doing the AC checklists for ARR was a little depressing. After all the discourse around desk-rejections you'd think authors would double and triple check their references. How can we stop this craziness?

We don’t always know what problems are hard for LLMs. So devs evaluate on tasks HUMANS find hard or on broad benchmarks. What if we could instead anticipate which scenarios a model will fail on—all without evaluating specific input examples? 🧵NEW PAPER by @jenniferlumeng.bsky.social

I'll be presenting my student Chloe's @chloenlp.bsky.social work constructing a dataset of YouTube channels and their historical subscribers counts today at ICWSM. 3:30 pm poster session, 4 pm session. We have a pip package! github.com/blast-cu/tub...

Someone should write something more about this because this myth that people are just using models for info retrieval and code generation keeps coming back, fueled by our own discomfort and company reports that omit or downplay erotic usages of chatbots.

Maria Antoniak@mariaa.bsky.social

There is a *ton* of erotic usage for ChatGPT, plus there are companies that specialize in role play like Character.AI with many, many users. And that’s just text, if we go to images and video... The big companies just don’t like to talk about it.

The #NLProc reciprocal reviewing policies are killing me as junior faculty with a mid-size group of junior students. At least one of them will submit to every cycle / relevant conference, but most of them are not qualified to review yet, so all of the reviewing burden falls on me 😭

The paper acceptance notifications will be out by the 6th of April, AoE. The PCs are working hard throughout the holiday season to finalize the decisions. Apologies for the delay!

We're thrilled to celebrate our own Martha Palmer, who has been appointed to the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI! Here's what she had to say: 🧵⬇️

Thinking about what makes me so mad about people's takes on Venezuela. Something clicked. It's fucking dehumanizing. All your takes on oil, international law, Trump. And our people? Dead, imprisoned, displaced, persecuted, impoverished, silenced. Don't expect us to shed any tears for the dictator.

"For the first time since this tragedy began, it felt like Venezuelans were finally given a voice on the world stage to tell our story without the noise of global electoral politics or distortions of activist ecosystems. Quite simply, our moment to speak."

We have a faculty panel about to start at San Miguel at 10:45am. See you there! Faculty panel: James Martin, Dilek Hakkani-Tur, Graham Neubig, Lu Wang #NAACL2025

This ARR cycle, we resubmitted 4 papers addressing (meta)reviewer feedback. They all got lower scores than they had before (requesting same reviewers), and all had the exact same borderline scores (~2.5). All papers in my AC batch (about 16) also have the same borderline scores. It looks very odd.

A group of us came together to challenge the dominant narrative of AI research - paper out today. We posit that “AGI” is as nebulous to define as its supposed benefits, and we argue that principled scientific, engineering and societal needs should drive AI research instead. Read 👇

2. Shut up in meetings. If everyone you talk to starts to think like you, then you need to talk less. If you take a moment before giving your opinion, students will use that moment to come up with an idea you never would have.

I have seen some anti-peer-review takes on here, and, believe me, I understand the frustrations, but I would urge caution before doing or publicly saying anything too drastic. We live in age rife with misinformation and anti-intellectualism—not everyone wants academia to survive
