Saw a post on tiktok about the use of the title "prince" in Wales signifying a diminution of status on the face of an increasingly powerful english king, saying basically that the english kings were not willing to tolerate another "king" within the scope of their realm.

Am I remembering something about a principality of Chester right?

The idea that the rulers of Gwynedd would acquiesce to a reduction in regal status amongst their contemporaries at the same time as they were attempting to assert their authority over them just doesn't make sense. Therefore we must base ourselves on the idea that the adoption of a new title

Would have served to quantify and emphasise that wider authority the princes aspired to.

As implied by the broad supremacy afforded to the ruler of Aberffraw over the other principle Welsh dynasties - encapsulated by the provisions found in the Venedotion Welsh lawbooks which afford Aberffraw a legal primacy over the houses of Deheubarth and Powys.

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd also would devote his political career to seeking an established relationship with the english crown in his position as Prince of Wales. A move made not as an acknowledgement of his lesser status but as a claim to political supremacy among the Welsh rulers

Not a decision forced upon the weak prince by a strong king, but a decision made to embody the prince's political aspirations to a wider authority than that held by the mere king of Gwynedd. An authority based on not only their territorial lordship, but on their position as leader of their nation

King, yes, but also leader of the wider nation as a whole. Llywelyn Fawr also carried on this trend by changing his title to "Prince of Aberffraw and Lord of Snowdon", pointing to his lordship in Gwynedd but also his position as overall leader of the Welsh through his position as Prince of Aberffraw

However, as J.B. Smith points out, the initial use of the title "prince" by Owain Gwynedd comes at a time of relative strength for the ruler and not weakness. It would be more apt to view the title as a claim to a broader supremacy on behalf of the rulers of Gwynedd and then Wales.

Interviewing a govt minister Hazarika shows a graph comparing young people claiming PIP to the size of our armed forces & declares it "tells a story about modern Britain" I can't even make a sarcastic comment about our fearless fourth estate, because Hazarika is a Labour politician

But of course we live in 2026 and the point of a country is to channel wealth from the bottom to the top, the state existing as a vehicle for further enriching the rich off the backs of the average person

Like I can't even think of a single reason validating the existence of countries if its not to help one another
