6-year-old reads a fairytale with the concept of “a deal with the devil” for the first time Me, trying to explain it: Well. You know how in K-Pop Demon Hunters, Gwi-Ma makes a deal with Jinu

This game looks so cool!

Cyclopean II: The Dreamlands has many cities and villages to visit and explore. I wanted each one to have a different vibe, based on Lovecraft's detailed descriptions in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Of course there is also quite a bit of creative license at play... #ScreenshotSaturday

I can’t exactly remember the first 5 RPGs I played. Basic D&D was definitely first. Then…Maybe Top Secret? Gamma World? (Cuz they were TSR games!) But just one-shots. Then I played one game of I *think* Runequest where I didnt understand the system. My world didnt really expand till Call of Cthulhu.

My first 5 rpgs? DnD/ADnD Gamma World FASA Star Trek the RPG Boot Hill Champions/Hero System (fantasy) Side note, Most played is probably a tie between Hero or GURPS

To me as a wee child in the ‘80s, RPGs were synonymous with D&D. And I still feel I carry this prejudice despite writing my own games and playing tons of other games. Like, if you wanna find religion, of course there’s always the Catholic Church 🤪

To switch metaphors, I feel I’ve been through a childhood phase of “of course D&D is The System, long may it reign” and then a phase of “other RPGs must smash and supplant the system” and now I’m just interested in working on my own beet farm

Really depressing and infuriating. As the NYT says, there haven’t been any kind of religious extremist killings in Jordan for years. It was essentially untouched by ISIS but now this

The New York Times@nytimes.com

A shooting during a funeral in Karak Province in Jordan left seven people dead and nearly three dozen injured, the local authorities said. It was one of the deadliest attacks in Jordan in years. nyti.ms/4zi99s0

My spouse grew up watching Arabic-dubbed anime (the dubbing industry then was in Iraq, and was eventually decimated by sanctions after Gulf War 1.... :( ). They recall being a child, seeing people using chopsticks in anime, and wondering what part of the Arab world these strange utensils were from

Great read. A good part of the anime openings from around the world panel I put together this past summer was discovering how many Arabic anime OP songs were jams, whether they were faithful (grendizer) or original (captain majid)

“Bones of the Moon”: Wow! Why had I not heard of this 80s Dreamland novel? Skipping between a young housewife’s waking life & a surreal semi-wacky (but ultimately very serious) dreamworld, it’s like an adult version of Clive Barker’s Abarat. Maybe the abortion theme could turn off some readers…?

Anyway despite the above tweet I really liked this book. If you don’t want to read any stories in which aborted children appear as living kids in a dreamworld (but they don’t seem particularly mad about it), dont read it

tldr: the hero has an abortion in the first 20 pages, and this becomes a big part of the Dream plot. The book’s not explicitly pro life (the hero says she’s still pro choice), but with its heavy element of ‘consequences of an abortion’, by a male author, it probably has a little to annoy everybody

When you look back at decades you can see how each one has a style of stories: a ‘50s movie/book is different from a ‘60s movie/book from ‘70s then ‘80s etc. But now that I’m getting old I realize definitely out-of-touch people were still writing & pitching ‘50s style stuff in the ‘70s

Three points of contention led to the failure of the latest rounds of Lebanese-Israeli negotiations.

The description of demons in the Dreamland roleplaying game is primarily inspired by the writings of Marco Polo, where he describes pretty much every religion he hasn’t heard of as worshipping demons

The names “Herbert” and “Norbert” are really tops for combining a dorky sound in modern English with a super cool meaning originally (“Her Bert” = bright/shining army (warrior) and “Nor Bert” = bright/shining north)

The Attic podcast does a 20-minute segment on my upcoming #dnd book “Dungeons! Illustrated Maps of Classic D&D Adventures”! Give it a listen! #ttrpg 🎲

Deciding that since it’s a world of infinite islands, Pokémon is the same as Christopher Priest’s Dream Archipelago. Also working hard to make the most obscure fiction references ever

Most illustrations of Lord Dunsany’s “Miss Cubbidge and the Dragon of Romance” (there are not many) draw the title character as middle-aged and/or frumpy because, probably, her name is Cubbidge. I must mention however that the text says she is about 18 and wearing a “low-necked evening dress”

In an old interview, Kazushi Hagiwara, creator of the manga "Bastard!!", mused about how he'd like to spend time on pure art technique like drawing steam rising from a coffee cup, but he has to draw other stuff to make money. I too would like be able to spend hours perfectly drawing steam ☕

Couldn't decide between two facial designs for a dragon so I basically layered them over eachother transparently in ProCreate and adjusted the lines until it was sorta in the middle

The viral video exchange between Abdul Zelensky-Sayed and a random racist shows El-Sayed being cool (he can’t help it) but it is slightly painful to see the Muslim Brotherhood, a messed up group with a complicated history, being reduced both by liberals & the racist guy to just “some bad Muslims”

The Muslim Brotherhood is a conservative and sorta f’ed up group, but as someone who has tried to pay attention to Egypt these last 15 years, they also won the only free Egyptian presidential election. Then they got crushed by the military in 2013, they’re outlawed & Egypt still isnt a democracy. :/

<sarcasm> considering Brock’s pervy personality in Pokémon, it is surprising they never leaned into the ‘ethnic exoticism’ angle and had him opining over the differences between Johto girls & Indigo girls and how he’d really like to get with someone from Alola. They really missed their chance </s>

Good news about humanity: even a tiny child can separate imagination from reality! I know this because our kids have talked a thousand times about eating poop or pooping on things but they have always known never to do it 👍

It's absolutely wild to see how many people are in support of this. I usually think slippery slope is one of the lazier arguments but come on how is this not just obviously a way to get people comfortable with them banning content before expanding the categories to anything they want?

"The Attic" (with Paul Maclean, Marty Jopson & @chrislackey.bsky.social ) did a 20-minute segment on my upcoming book of #dnd maps/cartoons, "Dungeons!" :D Thanks guys! #ttrpg
