Announcement by Estonian Ministry of the Interior: Following Russia’s decision to temporarily restrict movement in some areas near the Estonian border, the situation across Estonia’s eastern border remains calm. Estonian authorities are monitoring developments closely and remain vigilant.

Welcome to our new DefMin, Martin Herem! Minister Herem brings 30 years of experience in defence, including serving as Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces and Commandant of the Estonian Military Academy. Thank you, Hanno Pevkur, for 4 years of dedicated leadership of our national defence. 🇪🇪

Estonian airspace is in safe hands. 🇪🇪🇹🇷🇪🇸 Turkish F-16 and Spanish EF-18M fighter jets are guarding our skies from Ämari Air Base as part of NATO’s air defence mission. Baltic Air Policing mission began on the same day Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined NATO in 2004. 🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹

August 31, 1994 marked what we in the Baltics 🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹 can call the real end of WW II. It was the day russian troops finally left Estonian and Latvian soil. 54 years after they first invaded. We achieved this with strong international support from many countries that are now our Allies in NATO.

Happy Independence Day, Ukraine! 🇺🇦 Today we celebrate 35 years of your restored independence. Estonia stands with you every day. This year, Estonia’s military support will reach at least 0.28% of GDP. We urge all Allies to keep up the support.

35 years ago, on August 20, Estonia restored its independence. 🇪🇪 We survived almost five decades of Soviet occupation. Today, we stand proud and free, side by side with our Allies, defending freedom in NATO and across Europe. And we will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom.

Parts of the former Soviet Union are only now starting to critically engage with their own history. They only now realise that almost everything they learned about the history of their own peoples was part of imperial construction and agenda. @laurimalksoo.bsky.social on russia’s imperial worldview.

Russia's root problem stems not from Putin's personality or the system of governance he created, but from Moscow's enduring view of other nations, other peoples, and even the agreements it signs. Lennart Meri Lecture by Lauri Mälksoo. #LennartMeriConference

Dear Allies, join the 5% club. Estonia and Lithuania are already there. The momentum is growing: European Allies and Canada increased defence spending by $139 billion in 2025. DefMins Hanno Pevkur 🇪🇪 and Robertas Kaunas 🇱🇹 have a simple message: join us. #WeAreNATO #AnkaraSummit

Estonia 🇪🇪 and Ukraine 🇺🇦 just signed a drone deal at #AnkaraSummit It means sharing knowledge, advancing technology and strengthening cooperation with Ukraine’s world-class defence innovators. Together, we will strengthen our defence industries and capabilities. #WeAreNATO

Head võidupüha! It’s Victory Day 🇪🇪 After WWI, Estonia fought to defend its independence against Soviet Russia and the Baltic German Landeswehr. On 23 June 1919, with Latvian support we won the decisive Battle of Cēsis/Võnnu. Today, we celebrate that freedom with our Allies.

Victory Day honours those who gave their lives for Estonia’s freedom and independence. It also reminds us of the deep ties between Estonia and Latvia and our shared struggle for freedom. We remember those who sacrificed for freedom and stand with those who still fight for it.

A new chapter in Estonia’s air defence. 🇪🇪 IRIS-T SLM brings medium-range air defence to Estonia for the first time, strengthening our ability to counter air threats. A ceremonial handover of IRIS-T SLM systems from 🇩🇪 Germany’s Diehl Defence took place today.

On 17 June 1940, more than 100,000 Red Army troops occupied independent Estonia. What followed were decades of terror, repression and lost freedom. Yet the occupiers never broke the Estonian people's will to be free. We do not forget. Never again. #NeverAloneAgain #WeAreNATO

Estonia 🇪🇪 and France 🇫🇷 are deepening defence cooperation. Ministers Hanno Pevkur and Catherine Vautrin signed a joint declaration to strengthen strategic dialogue and cooperation across all military domains, reinforcing the great partnership we share in #NATO. More 👇

Today marks 85 years since the first Soviet mass deportations in Estonia. More than 10,000 people torn from their homes. 7,000 of them women, children, and the elderly. We will never forget the innocent lives shattered and lost. We will stand for our freedom. #NeverAloneAgain

In June 1941 Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus faced the same atrocities. In total, 95,000 people were deported. Terror to suppress any possible resistance— something Russia is repeating in Ukraine today. A crime against humanity that has no statute of limitations.

Today we celebrate 142 years of the Estonian blue-black-white flag 🇪🇪— a symbol of our freedom, identity and resilience. To mark the occasion, we raised a unique flag created from 1,136 photos by Estonian people, capturing the colours of our shared home.

The flag can be seen in Tartu, in front of the Estonian National Museum, until August 20, Estonia’s Day of Restoration of Independence. Titled “Colours of Freedom”, it was originally created to mark the 100th anniversary of Estonia’s independence.

1 German-Netherlands Corps will assume NATO’s primary responsibility for the defence posture of 🇪🇪Estonia and 🇱🇻Latvia later this year. This means more allied presence, more joint training and stronger deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank. Thank you 🇩🇪🇳🇱 #WeAreNATO
