Was so excited to plant a sassafras this year that I planted two. This one's leaves shriveled up before it sprang back into form; the other did well most of the season until it suddenly died. Excited again about this survivor! #nativeplants

Fifth year trying dwarf chinkapin oak acorns after reading D. Tallamy. Yield is never great but I do get a couple seedlings every year. Still not convinced there's an oak for every yard (eg we don't have much full sun and our yard is wet), but ask me again in a few years! #nativeplants

Very satisfying to shake a paw paw tree, hearing the fruit fall through foliage and go thump. I don't think the smell and taste will ever grow on me. Really like how easy they are to grow from seed. #nativeplants

"The forest-dwelling Oak Titmouse will hammer on an acorn to break through the hull. it doesn't want the acorn meat itself, but the weevil grub inside. We don't know how such birds know what's inside the nut."

Here's some flavor: "I love acorns and always have some in my desk drawer or lined up on the mantle or tucked in a pocket of my rucksack. I give them as gifts, but only to my closest friends. [ctnd]

To me, acorns are a tree's dark pearls, they are bird home and squirrel dash, and they are the sound of fall weather - pang pang pang - as Santa Ana winds knock loose the hard nuts that pelt the roof of the backyard shed." #nativeplants

Got to show off cool bees to some cool neighbors at a garden project today. They were pretty amazed by the existence of green bees! Plant native plants, connect with neighbors. A striped sweat bee (Agapostemon sp) on new england aster. #NativePlants #bees #Minnesota
