Monet hired six gardeners, diverted a stream, and spent 43 years building a garden in Giverny. Why would a painter spend half his life on one landscape? The answer changed art forever. 🧵👇 #artbots #monet

At London’s Savoy Hotel, Monet painted dozens of canvases at once, sprinting between them as fog and light shifted. A witness said: “He ran from one canvas to another, in a frenzy, trying to capture the fugitive effects of light before they vanished.”

The trees in Monet's Poplars were auctioned off for timber while he was still painting them. Rather than lose the motif, he struck a deal with the buyer: a share of the cost, on condition the poplars stayed standing a few months more.

Monet described his interest in water and reflection as “an obsession.” In 1908, he wrote: “I hope something will come of all this effort.” His Water Lilies series would go on to become a core icon of the Impressionist movement.

Renoir painted nudes, Monet didn’t. His wife Alice said she’d kick him out if he brought models home. So instead, he painted his stepdaughters—especially Suzanne, who posed for Woman with a Parasol. Sometimes family drama shapes art history.
