Seeing an apocalyptic tidal wave surging toward my location, snapping a pic, posting with the text “am I cooked chat,” and feeling a little endorphin boost when it gets three likes.

No one pronounces the word “evil” like Donald Pleasance.

Francesco Francavilla@ffrancavilla.bsky.social

“I met him, 15 yrs ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding in even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this 6-year-old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and... the blackest eyes, the Devil’s eyes”

Not hope nor dread but a secret third thing.

I am curious how you are feeling about the forthcoming midterm elections. Positive, negative, aprehensive, concerned, elated, or something else?

Posted this before I discovered the good news about Brazil; I hadn’t even checked.I just assumed after Serbia we couldn’t possibly have *two* positive political outcomes in the world today.

Fuck absolutely everyone involved in generating this AI flood that is materially damaging real creative laborers. Here's hoping this work helps win more lawsuits, though. Anything that might help pop the bubble is a delight to me.

👨‍⚖️ TL;DR: AI doesn't need to write high-quality books for non-AI book writers to get hurt. Cheap books at massive volume are enough and they've cut what the average human-written book earns in most genres and pushed human titles down the bestseller ranks. (10/n)

The only consolation is that it’s always very old (and no doubt very tired) artists who have, fortunately, already created the work by which they will be remembered. Still.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

The problem with trying not to be a hater is that the number of things to truly hate in contemporary culture and society is growing exponentially faster than the number of things to love. It’s like kudzu: all of this appalling, mindless, anti-human stuff, on every surface, in every crack.

“We may call Eurydice forth from the world of the dead, but we cannot make her answer; and when we turn to look at her we glimpse her only for a moment, before she slips from our grasp and flees. As all historians know, the past is a great darkness, and filled with echoes." ~ Margaret Atwood

Oh, did Matty Yglesias say something dumb? Was Megyn Kelly mean? Did you see a bad take from Will Stancil? Was Tucker Carlson a hypocrite? I have great news, none of these people are real. They don’t matter. Update your muted words and free yourself of their rusted, brittle shackles.

More than 200 students at SUNY Geneseo recently received a marketing email from an AI company, which has partnered with their university, that set off faculty alarms about academic freedom. The provost said she had not approved or known about the email before it was sent. https://chroni.cl/4dQu8tx

Listening to my young coworkers talking recently about how the best time to grow up would have been the 1980s was a trip. "There was NO social media! You could just enjoy your life!"
