We've shortened the length range for essays to 900-2100 words (from 1000 - 2500), because attention spans have shortened.

Every day at this, I learn something new. Today's new knowledge: publishing quantity ≠ writing quality.

For the Fall 2026 issue (with a two-month reading period), we received about 80 total submissions. It's now the 10th day of the current call for submissions, and we've already received 30! I think the Winter issue is going to have excellent content!

Man, Fiverr will not even let you post a project brief unless you use their AI bot to craft it. It crafts words and phrases that I do not intend and would never use. Creeepy!

I'm preparing for our first quarterly print edition, to coincide w/ the release of the Winter 2026 issue on December 1. Definitely need a HUMAN illustrator for the cover (*not* AI-generated--too taboo right now). Tried Dribble, Fiverr, Behance, etc., but no luck so far. Any ideas? [budget is v. low]

The open reading period for the Winter issue started two days ago, and starting to receive some very nice stuff. I can't say what, but y'all are gonna like the Winter Moocat!

Very excited: confirmed that the print anthology will be available in time for the relaunch. I've ordered a single proof copy and will make a few revisions based on that. After that, I'll turn on distribution, and anyone can buy a copy. (AND, I'll start sending out the free copies to those promised)

I've just started doing a local "Indie Bookstore Crawl" set for the month of August in the DFW area. I've left batches of cards advertising this site at the two I've been to so far. Quite a few left to visit!

Incontrovertible proof that tiny cows exist. And apparently they can also fly.

Just submitted the interior pages and cover wrap for the 25-year anthology, "Gentle Moos from Round the Globe: The first 25 years of moocat.net" . I should have the eProofs in 3-5 days. When printed, that pinkish color will look like a rich burgundy.

Just got permissions to print the 2 Li-Young Lee poems—that’s 3 for 3 of the O.G. “already famous” poets. Foreword is being written, so should be able to go to print soon with the anthology: Gentle Moos from Round the Globe: The First 25 Years of moocat.net. It will be avail. to buy on the site.

We solemnly propose that this new, atmosphere-bearing rocky planet be renamed “Elizabeth-Montgomery,” because to date no atmosphere-bearing rocky planets in the temperate zone in which liquid water can exist have been named after the talented star of Bewitched. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/16/s...

Calls for submission for Fall 2026 relaunch are closed. We received 89 submissions total, 79 from Duosuma, 8 via the moocat site, and 2 direct. Accepted at least 17 for publication (& hopefully, 1 or 2 more). Can't wait to announce the final contents! Plus, for the first time, a print anthology!

Welcome to Deadline Day! After a long wait, starting sometime in April, the calls for submission for the 25-year-anniversary relaunch issue (Fall 2026, to be launched on Aug. 30) close today. Any piece that gets accepted in the relaunch issue is eligible to be included in the print anthology!
