The World’s Largest Earthquake Drill will happen on October 15 at 10:15 am! More than 10.5 million Californian’s have already registered to participate and practice the recommended earthquake safety action – DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON.

The aftershock sequence for the Panama magnitude-7.7 continues. There are now 57 aftershock earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 4, including M6.6 and M6. Many more smaller aftershock earthquakes have also occurred. USGS sequence product associates relevant earthquakes at main event page.

For many, this week's rain will be very good news, but for others, it'll be too much of a good thing. Aspen Acres burn scar, southeastern Colorado, and Douglas/Elbert Counties are my highest flood concern zones. #COwx

More than 10,000 PhDs have left the federal government. Much federal research now works within an actionable science framework. More can be done to support science-to-society pathways; however, basic research, which requires high risk and some unsuccessful efforts, remains extremely important.

New from Lauren Supplee at Can We Still Govern? The US government had gradually become better at producing and using evidence. This evidence-based infrastructure is largely invisible, important, and one more thing gutted by Trump. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-system...

The US needs a system where scientific researchers compete for funding to advance their work. We created a functioning system and are taking much of jt apart right now. OnlyMarms is a fun story, but science won’t be advanced through donations.

Reports about the Tibet-Nepal flood have been devastating—and confusing. Here's the whirlwind story of how scientists around the world pieced together the cascade of events. @science.org: www.science.org/content/arti... #flood #hazard #naturaldisaster #landslide

An incredibly well-timed Landsat 9 pass captured the effects of yesterday’s catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border. The event was so massive that it was detected by seismometers around the world.

It's that time of year again - the EarthScope ISCE+ course in InSAR processing and analysis is underway! Here (on his short course debut) is Francisco Delgado leading us through a first modeling exercise using InSAR displacements over Okmok Volcano!

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.

as a retired industrial scientist, it’s important to note industry has a time window that is short and won’t fund stuff unless they think it could pay off within five years. just because it’s interesting doesn’t get funded.

For Venezuela right now: yes, 100%. And for California (and I know Lucy knows this), the lesson is to design FOR recovery. All the new housing, renewable energy, etc. that we can't wait to build ... it WILL go through major earthquakes, so let's design it to recover function quickly. We know how.

Lucy Jones@drlucyjones.bsky.social

The coming months could compound the problems in Venezuela. Disasters damage what is already weak. Recovery needs an influx of money and people to get the economic system functioning again.

Thoughts from a seismologist on the Venezuelan earthquakes: We are seeing the damage in Caracas and the most recent models show that Caracas was badly hit. But there are almost 1 million people who received even stronger shaking earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Composite plot of the two coseismic interferograms (Sentinel-1, from Copernicus) with the USGS epicenters of the two earthquakes and faults from GEM. The shoreline San Sebastián fault lines up with the fringes in the west and is probably the fault responsible.

⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

earthquakeinsights.substack.comCatastrophic M7.5 earthquake strikes northern VenezuelaSevere damage; collapsed buildings; significant fatalities possible

Not plotted here but the epicenter is located near the western limit of InSAR fringe, indicating rupture was predominantly towards the east, including Caracas. So rupture directivity, which is like a seismic Doppler effect, likely contributed to stronger ground-shaking effects and damage.

It's taken me a while, but here is my first interferogram of the Venezuela earthquakes from Sentinel-1. It's an ascending track to the west of the epicenter, and the pattern of displacements is consistent with slip on a fault that runs close to and parallel to the coast.

Damaging doublet of magnitude-7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes in Venezuela. PAGER Red estimation from ground-shaking effects. The impacts from these earthquakes will be compounded because of significant secondary effects (landslides, liquefaction). earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

We don’t know where the next scientific breakthroughs will happen. Which is why we need to fund some basic, curiosity-driven research, regardless of how uncertain the outcomes.

Earthquake faults on late-night TV! It’s great to see a paper highlighted this way. Now we need Jimmy Kimmel to keep up the word about “Drop, Cover, Hold on” during an earthquake. Probably not the thing he thinks about day in, day out ;)
