I know it's silly, but watching 8 Pokemon Youtubers play games together was legitimately a great bonding experience for me and my kids.

Sitting in the pediatric ward. Four to a room. Kid next to mine doesn't want to be here. He bemoans being stuck near foreigners. I shut the curtain. A bad day has just been made a little bit worse.

If it's wrong to tell immigrants in America that they "aren't American" after decades, then it's also offensive to say similar shit to long term immigrants in every other country. I am so tired of Westerners giving xenophobia a pass.

We could totally get republicans to switch to the European dating system if we told them that the Fourth of July is 4/7. Trump would sell so much merch with 47 =4/7

Waiting for the train in Tokyo: "I have lined up for the train. Ah, someone is walking parallel with the train, so clearly they are going to a different part of the platform. This is fine!" Waiting for the Plane Train in Atlanta: "MA'AM, YOU GOTTA LINE UP FROM THE BACK!"

I want to start a book club where we read standard English-class books, discuss them in terminally online ways and make ridiculous memes about them.

Me, as an autistic child: "Wow, I really love this book about a kid that feels things nobody else in his community feels. And the sequel about the disabled artist that gets outcast from her community is amazing, too." Me, rereading the series as an adult: "Well, shit."

It's interesting that most people say they're "floating on air" as a way of expressing joy. I feel like I'm floating what I'm detached from reality. It's not really positive. This sounds like a complaint, but I genuinely think it's interesting how people experience things differently.

It's so frustrating talking about anything related to Japan online. I've been here for 13 years, and I have experienced a lot. And yet every time I say something that I think is cool or interesting, I get people jumping down my throat. So I'll shut up and let weebs weeb.

Made the mistake of asking an American group of "progressives" for suggestions on reading materials related to racism outside of white-on-Black racism. Nearly every comment is "You mean colorism?" "You mean xenophobia?" "Surely you mean nationalism, right??" No. I mean racism.

I think... I have finally lost my sister. I can't find much help with this. I think most people are either close forever, or never close. But we were close, and now she's gone. Changed into someone I don't recognize. And I'm grieving the sister I had.

I tried to get along with my BIL, but then he drops abysmal takes like "dual citizenship shouldn't exist." Like, what a dumbass take. i wouldn't even be mad because it's so stupid, but this asshole has very much affects my sister's worldview. She's gotten noticeably dumber.

People are way too tolerant of Japanese xenophobia. No, it’s not just affecting tourists. My son (who is a Japanese national) just started first grade and we’re already dealing with bullies. I didn’t want to have to have the racism talk this soon, but I guess I have to now.

There’s something so ghoulish about going to the shop where a woman died and making tourist TikTok selfie videos about it. A woman was stalked and failed by police. Murdered for saying no. But now tourists are visiting the site of her murder because she happened to work at a game/anime store.

Japanese parents are breathing a sigh of relief that their kids‘ name won’t become the new “Alexa” or “Allegra.” Imagine if Grok was named “Olivia.” That’s how annoying it was to name the plagiarism machine “Sora.”

People who think marriage is meaningless are never immigrants. You cannot just go to a lawyer and draw up a paper that will give your partner a visa to any country you legally reside in. You can get married and have that, though.

If a “bilingual” or “immersion“ school does no marketing in the minority language and tests applicants in the community language, it’s not really an immersion or bilingual school. It’s just another rich kid school.

I love that my husband immediately knew which of the Gen 10 starters was my favorite. I mean, I guess it would be obvious that a Sobble fan would like Gecqua.

We need to tell kids about asexuality pretty much as soon as we teach them what sex is. Do you know how much of a relief it was to find out, at 13, that there are people like that? For me, I was just a late bloomer, but it was such a blessing to know that I wasn’t broken.

Maya is my best friend for modeling, but free software being industry standard is always welcome news. I can learn blender.

holy shit!! BLENDER IS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD NOW BOY, MAYA WHO

Okay, I get why people prefer not saying “Chinese New Year,” but ”Lunar New Year” is also just… not a great option. Most used Lunar calendar? Islamic. Year of the Horse =/= Lunar calendar at all (Japan uses that zodiac with a solar calendar)

Vitiligo representation is so annoying. It’s a serious autoimmune disorder, most common in Asian people, yet so many people treat it like a purely superficial Black-exclusive skin condition. My sister has it, and some people think her legs are dirty because people just don’t know how it looks.

I’m so weirdly annoyed by people specifying “Kewpie mayo“ in recipes but then just saying ”rice.” BITCH, DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MANY KINDS OF-

What if someone made the opposite of The Parent Trap. Two divorced parents hear that their kids are getting married and attempt to stop the wedding by getting married to each other (because then their kids with be step-siblings, and in this theoretical movie universe, step siblings can’t marry).

Kenneth Choi is doing a fantastic job as Ted Wassanasong. The voice is obviously different, but the performance is spot on. It’s exactly the way you’d expect Ted to speak! You can really tell he did his research.

Parent: *does something for their child* Everyone: “If you always do that for them, they’ll never learn to do it for themselves!” Also everyone: “I used AI to-“

Americans: “Our maternity healthcare is exorbitantly expensive and everyone should empathize with our plight!” Me: “I didn’t get an epidural because I couldn’t afford one.” Americans: “…You don’t get a trophy for that!”

We need to start fighting for government funded adult catch-up vaccines. In 18 years, we’re going to have a lot of adults who need support and care. This is no longer a niche thing. At the very least, we need to make it clear what Rubella does to pregnant people and their babies.

The pandemic absolutely pickled their brains, the percentage of Republicans who say MMR vaccine risks outweigh the benefits has more than doubled since 2020.

Every day I get closer to naturalizing here in Japan. American citizenship is so worthless we’re giving it away on reality TV.

The Daily Beast@thedailybeast.bsky.social

Kristi Noem has been working with the producer of “Duck Dynasty” to pitch a reality TV show—titled “The American”—where immigrants will compete in a string of challenges across the country “for the honor of fast-tracking their way to U.S. citizenship,” according to a new report.

I really do think the Internet was better when we politely policed each other’s grammar. It literally made me a better writer when I was gently mocked for errors. Now I see people just lazily making infographics and stuff and writing “Yeah, there’s a grammar mistake! It’s ok!” Just have some pride.

One week in Japan: “I must not act like a gaijin!” One year in Japan: “Gaijin SMASH!” Five years in Japan: “I prefer gaiKOKUjin, actually.” Ten years in Japan: “You call my kid that word again and I’ll rip out your tongue.”

*random person updates their LinkedIn in an industry where layoffs are everywhere* Gamer paparazzi: “AH! OBLIVION UE5 REMAKE!!” Good lord, this is why our NDAs are so intense. Y’all can’t let us do anything.

It is entirely possible for one depiction of a character to appear autistic, and other depictions to appear allistic. Because characters aren’t real people. If you stop making them autistic, they stop being autistic. Seems obvious, but I’ve been insulted for this opinion.

I hate when I reply to a reply and the top-level poster acts like I’m directly addressing them. Especially when I agree with them. Like, why we getting hostile? I’m just chatting.

I refuse to switch my Pirate Yakuza game to English for too long (mostly so I can pretend I’m studying), but I can’t deny that the dub is excellent. Obviously Matt Mercer is a great actor, but in my short time I noticed a lot of great performances, and no obvious duds.

Me: “Oh, I see! The joke is that the villainous animal is actually surprisingly progressive and supportive of women!” Audio commentary: “The joke is the villainous animal has a fetish for this ethnic group!”
