The “AI is just a tool” crowd is starting to get on my nerves. Those who think that if they can just extract the ‘good uses’ for it, it’s all fine. The engine that allows AI to run is an extremely, resource-hungry one. Resources that should be used for the actual betterment & sustainment of people.

Goodness, now I have *AI agents* writing to me with feedback(?) about my articles. Note: I have no idea what this thing means in the part I’ve highlighted in orange:

Apologies for the lack of updates. My primary social place is Mastodon. I used to crosspost between the two networks, then the tool I was using proved unreliable. So I started doing it manually. But it's frustrating, because on my Mastodon instance my post can be up to 500 characters long, while h—

In a recent conversation, an acquaintance told me that “LLMs make me feel empowered”, which seems so contradictory to me. I feel empowered when, for example, I have to face a sudden issue and manage to solve it by doing my homework.

There are no “Anti-AI zealots”, Mr Masnick. Only AI zealots, and people with common sense who don’t drink the Kool-AI of the AI industry, and recognise that the costs of ‘AI’ vastly, spectacularly outweigh the benefits.

Another day where my timeline serves me depressing news and information I have zero power to act on. It’s this overlap of ‘good to know’ and ‘bad to know’ that’s making these times anguishing. I’m also annoyed that, by spreading the word, I’m both raising awareness and feelings of powerlessness.

Pay attention to those people who don’t even want you to understand them or ‘solve’ their problems — all they want is for you to *listen* to them. And for that you have to stop yapping. To stop talking *at* people and broadcast yourself.

(1/2) Goodness, the amount of bad takes regarding the Steam Machine is overwhelming: “They should have tried to hit the $999 mark for the price” — Base model costs $1,049. You can’t afford $50 more for it? “I was expecting console prices” — LOL, the Steam Machine is not a console, it’s a PC.

(2/2) “At this point, it’s better to just build your own gaming PC.” — Good luck finding a decent graphics card, adequate RAM and storage capacity, for less than $1,049 today. “Just buy a Steam Deck” — LMAO ↓

The best feedback I’ve received so far is a short email from one of my readers, that says: “AI is what happens when rich idiots and poor idiots unite.”

Tech — current tech and the current industry trends — have broken an unseen contract between me and it/them. Me and you are no longer tech’s end — we are means to an end for someone else in tech.

Sometimes I go back and read old posts from when I was more prolific & inspired, but on the other hand I can’t escape this feeling of looking at all that tech talking, and framing it as “Eh, I used to drink more at that time” and now that ‘alcohol’ has somehow lost its cool, if you know what I mean.

If you asked me right now what I wanted to do in my life, my answer would be: love my wife, write my novel, take photos, play some games on my PC. As you can see, technology plays little to no part in any of these activities. And that is also a measure of my current interest in it.

I was just reminded of something I said to a friend, at the uni, 30 years ago: “If you’re waiting for something to happen, you’re not happening.” Now it’s I who needs to hear those words, past-me!
