Recently got a Costco membership to augment Target and Fred Meyer and it's incredible what you can get in bulk. The microfiber cloths are made for cars so cleaning glasses should look like a comedy skit.

This is one entirely plausible outcome of GenAI:

I’ve said AI will do to software engineering what the internet did to journalism. There will be a lot more of it and fewer people making money from it as a full time job as there’s now a lot more cheaply created supply.

Damn this is good.

📺 WE WANT OUR SPTV! 📺 So you're gonna get SPTV! SPTV is Sub Pop’s new 24/7 streaming channel of choice music videos from the label’s storied history – from the '80s through today! Lose the FOMO, give yourself the #TBT treatment, and watch now-> youtube.com/live/SLI9dLH...

Tops on carrots and radishes are the best because toasted nuts, garlic, evoo, and salty hard cheese makes for a spicy green pesto.

Signed up to replace Target, Fred Meyer, and most Amazon Shopping. Now the Q is— how do you pay for a hot dog at the Costco self checkout machine that doesn't take credit cards? At the machine now. I'll just wait. I am v vested in this.

As Saka often does when describing his bizarre proposals, he called this a "highly technical amendment," a term that has a meaning that is not that.

Seattle used to hit 80s a few times a summer. Now is time for shorts, hoodie, and rain boots season.

The changing leaves are very pretty! Also you will not be able to do things outside for the next six months. Your limbs will be tightly swaddled in layers of stretchy fabric at all times. You will spend a lot of your time in the dark.

This 💯 — acting like nothing has changed is absolutely wild enough to call out in everyday conversation. The city used to be covered by gray clouds all winter with a rain so light you could never tell if it was really raining or not. It was not cold— the clouds acted like a blanket over the sound.

I’m gonna be real, thanks to climate change, jokes about Seattle rain just make me sad We’ve been in a drought for a very long time. Mount Rainier is losing its glaciers. The Olympic Mountains don’t have snow. It’s just not funny

Two things stand out in the replies: 1. Conclusive evidence for LLM cognition is anecdotal. 2. All-in-on-it folks tend to believe in cognition anyways. LLMs as a helpful assistant has me bullish but explicit prompting is still required. It's one abstraction level so far.

would love to hear even a single actual argument about how AI "changes the nature of humanity" not based in fanciful speculation

Giant companies succeed with GenAI because the process was already codified on paper. Midcap companies run on institutionalization instead of codified policy which does not transfer one to one to LLMs— getting value from LLMs requires the codified docs because it's all LLMs are a gradient search.

If you never had to use this route to get home you don't understand how the 8 route was broken for decades across multiple mayors. Mayor Wilson is the first to stop making excuses and just fix it.

If you've been paying attention to the news recently, you may be wondering: what's going on in City Hall? What you might not have heard is that we are doing the work and getting real results for Seattle residents.

Bike-train nerd equivalent of an astronomic blood moon here

The Oak Creek Trail was the first real gravel so far (as opposed to crushed stone), but in good shape, and connected to the Drexel Bike Path which was paved and nice. In Oak Creek I found a good spot for trainspotting and waved at my son’s Empire Builder train from Chicago back home to Seattle.

Is Seatbelt on macOS sufficient for untrusted code? Sandbox profiles that deny by default seem to be relatively safe. Service exceptions look risky since macOS services running as unintentional proxies that appear to be a recurring issue. The q is: can you dev on VSCode w/o trusting VSCode?

Seatbelt-exec looks promising if VSCode can be easily limited but tweaking that sounds like a pit. System services opens up a lotta scope. Running a VM means running a full-screen Linux Window Manager in a native macOS window. You can in theory forward Xorg apps but not yet Wayland on macOS.

The question is worth asking because the advance of GenAI capabilities changed the security equation. It should be easy to pull from *npm* and not gaf if the package ends up malicious. Worst case scenario you should lose the dev env and not the machine is the point.

The goal here is to understand what security boundaries exist for running untrusted code on personal hardware in a GenAI/LLM world. VSCode Remote for example opens up a bidirectional command execution pipeline so a rogue processes could feasibly execute commands on the host.

PWA Apps are great for cloud work but you lose editor integration, native OS Menus and some keybindings function differently. PWA is my existing method of choice, but running VSCode natively with extensions and GenAI integration that cannot wreck a system would be nice too. The q is just how-

Some layering options for a dev machine: - browser: PWA app - not-my-machine: Gold standard - microVM: hypervisor w/thin kernel - full VM: hypervisor w/kernel mods - app-policy: local policy file that limits permissions - containers: resource limiting; not a security boundary - raw dog: just run it

Sick burn for nerds who installed Linux from a magazine floppy or CD in 1995

Getting this shit to work smoothly is like trying to get both sound and your printer working at the same time in Debian unstable in the 1990s. It shouldn't be like that.

Turns out the eject button by to the SDCard slot is a physical network kill switch. Really needs a glass cover labeled "break in case of emergent" with a tiny hammer.
