On a serious note, the number of slop books clogging the history selection is truly depressing. Any keyword you can think of, there is a self-published book with suspiciously waxy AI cover art ready to teach you about that exact thing.

WHY WOULD I BUY A SLOP HISTORY BOOK WHEN I CAN PRODUCE MY OWN SLOP HISTORY BOOK AT THE PUSH OF A BUTTON I want an impenetrable text written by an academic up to their armpits in papyrus fragments. I want a bibliography that takes up 1/4 of the pages.

This is what these slop merchants just do not get. They are standing beside a contaminated drinking fountain trying to sell the same water in a paper cup. That's their entire business model. Even if I wanted AI history (and I don't), why would I go with a middle man?

The American Kalem company said "Hold my beer" and sent a whole film crew to Egypt to capture the whole darn thing. FROM THE MANGER TO THE CROSS (1912) was supposed to be a short but everyone got carried away and darn if they didn't make the earliest known American epic feature.

Can Hollywood be normal about Egypt ever? No. No, they cannot. And you may think that the Egyptian thing started with the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 but, no, they were mummy mad well before that

This week's #OliveArtClub has me continuing, after my #auctober gold drawing, to be haunted by metallic textures.

For this week’s #OliveArtClub, please make art based on this box of loose leaf tea. All skill levels and mediums welcome, no AI. I took the picture but I do not own the tea company’s branding or logo and have no connection to them except as a customer

It reminds me of Elon Musk trying constantly to get the attention of Stephen King specifically. (Instead, he gets Joyce Carol Oates, which I suppose can be taken as proof that god exists and has a sense of humor)

I always assumed tech bros were atheists (big terminally online atheist energy) or nondenominational Sunday Protestant at most. Their pope obsession is probably rooted in a movie they didn’t understand or something equally stupid

This is a great excuse to plug the British miniseries FLICKERS (1980), one of the most authentic portrayals of the madcap days of early cinema. Hoskins plays a sleazy small timer who ends up paired with a wealthy woman who needs to cover an illicit affair.

Today in 1942 Bob Hoskins was born.

Hoskins brings his everyman charm as the fast-talking Arnie and Frances de la Tour is excellent as Maud, who seeks to break out of middle class morals and make something of her new man.

I hate to keep bringing things back to Eurovision (no, I don't, actually) but using betting markets to predict events has been standard in the fandom for years and years and, frankly, psychic hotlines would be rolling their eyes at the dishonesty. The bookies got a few years wrong but

I think I need to find an all-Nordic fanclub or something, assuming the contest ever gets its act together again. A bunch of Americans were demanding that Sweden send a Swedish song and I had to carefully explain why the language rules came into being in the first place.

Even when they were 90% right in predicting a dark horse winner, it was something like "the odds were completely off for a few months and the winner wasn't even in the running but once their performance was unveiled a few days before the final, they shot up" so they didn't really predict anything

When people were talking about betting markets being the most accurate predictor, I had to laugh because that sort of talk was rampant in the Eurovision fandom as well. 2024 kind of broke them (not only Switzerland but Latvia and Slovenia and Poland) but they have the memory of goldfish.

Brazilin director Mario Peixoto appears in a small role in his silent masterpiece LIMITE, which imagines the dying thoughts of three people in a lifeboat. The film was suppressed and only one copy survived, so we are very fortunate to have it.

Regarding that lady using AI to describe her daughter's good qualities... I wish to counterprogram with some good parenting. I was in a pet store, an energetic boy (maybe 6 or 7) came meowing up and saw Douglas. His dad was right behind him and told him that they always ASK before approaching dogs

The boy meowed and asked if he could pet Douglas. Douglas was overstimulated so I told the boy that maybe waving would be better. He gave an enthusiastic wave and continued off to the cat toys with his dad (more meows). Good parenting because the boy was allowed to be himself but was given good

Safety tips and lessons that will serve him well as he grows up. Approach dogs with care. Ask permission before touching anything or anyone. Listen to what people tell you is ok. Meow.
