theconversation.comLearning with AI falls short compared to old-fashioned web searchDoing the mental work of connecting the dots across multiple web queries appears to help people understand the material better compared to an AI summary.

I've been having conversations with other profs this week about this change of pedagogy. I see other non-English areas starting to lean more into the writing process, writing during classtime, and away from the product. It's a good thing. #EduSky #iteachEnglish

Posting this important @mattdinan.bsky.social piece again. I recognized the challenge in the extract 20 years ago because in the courses I taught, students were all conscripts, not volunteers. I had to introduce them to the pleasures and challenges of writing. mattdinan.substack.com/p/the-ai-ske...

For anyone jumping with excitement, temper yourself. Yes, we need to continue adjusting to and reassessing AI in the classroom. Doing so with a grant from Big Tech with a dog in the AI game? That's problematic. #EduSky #iteachEnglish #edtech

Students internalize that "sounding" a certain way is what's desired in the writing transaction, so if there's a way to make that happen, they will take advantage. I've said from the get-go that the chief challenge of LLMs is figuring out what we should value when it comes to the writing students do

Teachers don't need more tech. They need smaller classes and more (paid) time for prep and instruction. But alas, the tech option means more profit for billionaires, while the latter would cost billionaires more in taxes. And so, in our current kleptocracy, tech is what teachers are going to get...

Check out my conversation with @marcusluther.bsky.social on @thebrokencopier.bsky.social podcast about #ArtfulAI in the #writing classroom. This is a fraught topic, but one that deserves our attention, and thinking things through with Marcus is always a joy 🙂

Marcus Luther@marcusluther.bsky.social

Reading Brett's book was the first time I could actually picture what AI could look like in a classroom in a way that prioritizes learning and critical thinking—including with student writing! Which is why I valued this conversation so much: thebrokencopier.substack.com/p/ai-in-the-...

I'd also rather be evaluated by a colleague than an admin who has never taught writing a day in their life. Those who have taught writing know the nuances and can share ideas. (Just as I wouldn't want to evaluate a science lab. Because I don't know the nuances of teaching it.) #iteachenglish

Marcus Luther@marcusluther.bsky.social

There are few things more motivating for me as a teacher than the experience of stepping into another teacher's classroom + seeing the world they have built, the tools they wield, the magic they create. My point? We need way, way more chances to see each other teach.

Good read. I'm rather impressed that the 7th and 8th graders are as intellectual about AI as the results show. #edusky #AI

Nathan Lang-Raad, Ed.D@drlangraad.bsky.social

Really interesting new finding: students were tested on the same reasoning puzzles used to benchmark AI. Three distinct mental models emerged about how AI "thinks." We need to completely rethink AI literacy based on developmental stages. #edusky open.substack.com/pub/drlangra...

The other significant takeaway is that if we want to help students better read and write, we need smaller classes that allow for personal contact and closer student cohorts. These are communicative acts and we that requires working from a place of community.

Appreciate this, Mickie. I've got to present to adjuncts in a couple of weeks, and this is a great resource I can use

Mickie Mueller@mickiemueller.bsky.social

I appreciate the work of @leonfurze.com "we do not need specialised “AI literacy” classes to deliver quality instruction on AI ethics – we already have the expertise we need in schools and universities" is exactly the point I was trying to drive home in my presentation to college faculty yesterday.

This makes me so happy...a replacement for Tweet Deck!!

Heather Turner@techielibgrl.com

Bluesky’s app and site can be tricky to navigate during chats—try Deck.blue! It’s free and works like TweetDeck. @jenniferlagarde.bsky.social and I use it to keep up, and we even pay a little to schedule posts. Give it a shot for an easier #TLSkyChat experience! #TlSky #EduSky #Podcasting #Podcast

An important read about AI, our relationships with students, and our own ethical behaviors as educators. #edusky #iteachenglish

I've started explicitly addressing some of what's described in this article as I go on my merry way, institution to institution insisting that we can and must continue to teach writing. There's two main risks. Both are real. 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/t...

Great tips here!! In my own conversations w/ students, my starter line is "Tell me about your process here." I've learned a lot about AI and student writing this year with that question. #ela #iteachEnglish

I use AI often to plan and scaffold. And the support students as a thought partner, research partner and writing partner. It’s all about a balance. For more about finding the write balance check out this book.

After being torn between the three options for the cover design of my first book, my coauthor and I decided to let our students choose! I think they chose well. AI in the Writing Workshop will be released on April 10. #EduSky #EduSkyAI #AIintheWW
