Gove is up there as one of the most viciously anti-democratic politicians we’ve had in this country & an outright Islamophobe. Not surprising to see him deny genocide & weaponise antisemitism against journalists. It’s worth watching the full @declassifieduk.org video. Clarifying.

The Board of Deputies boldly continue their campaign to drain the term antisemitism of all meaning. I’m hoping that at some point, someone, somewhere is going to realise this isn’t the best idea in the world. 😬

You’ll know a genuine campaign against antisemitism when: 👉 It isn’t being used to silence dissent over the racist policies of a country that is committing genocide, ethnic cleansing & apartheid. (1/5)

A genuine question for all my @unitetheunion.bsky.social friends. I’m aware of the Unite campaign, ‘No Ban without a Plan’. Where would I find the plan? Where would I find the work that my union is doing on a just transition, led by workers, for instance? 1/2

In my conversations with the UK Prime Minister and the Chancellor, I have been very clear that whilst we of course support net zero, we cannot have a jobless transition, abandon our energy security or offshore our carbon responsibilities. That is why we have argued for this decision on Jackdaw.

Or is the plan to wait for the government to come up with a plan? I’m asking because I’ve got kids & one day I might have grandkids & I think a plan which doesn’t leave them a world on fire & consumed with wars is important. Can anyone help? 2/2

Of course, the missing piece of the jigsaw is the intense, obsessive pressuring of Labour Ministers by business lobbyists - those who benefit from this uncertainty & are able to pay workers less, keep them in insecurity & avoid union organising. (9/10)

The real remedy is about worker status - the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of bogus self-employed and limb (b) workers ripe for exploitation because they do not have the same employment status & rights as other workers. (7/10)

That’s what the legislation was there to fix, and it is now being ignored, kicked into the long grass - as if it was never there in the first place. (8/10)

… and (b) tackling a loophole currently letting firms mostly control someone’s work but avoid employing them, if contracts let individuals send someone else - what’s known as the substitution loophole. (5/10)

Unfortunately, this is another example of how the comprehensive package of employment rights envisaged in the 2019 manifesto & the subsequent New Deal for Working People has been watered down. (3/10)

The Labour government have agreed to consult on two aspects: (a) putting the onus on organisations to prove contractors are self-employed at tribunal, not on workers to show they deserve rights … (4/10)

Trade unions have been quiet on it, for the most part, but if we are to have any ambitions to address exploitation in the gig economy, or organise on anything like a level playing field, it’s vital. (2/10)

I’ve often thought of this from Terry Eagleton - particularly when discussing the issue of academisation with other socialists & those in education unions.

To fail to do this is accepting a kind of authoritarian rule, which can the be used to shut down dissent of all kinds, by any govt in the future. It’s already been used to arrest hundreds of people who aren’t terrorists in any shape or form & has to be stopped in its tracks. 3/4

You can only legitimately oppose this if you think that Palestine Action are in fact terrorists or you don’t honestly care about democratic rights & freedoms. Either way, you’re in big trouble & we are, as a society if we follow your passivity. 4/4

This government, any government that misuses & weaponises anti-terrorism legislation against protestors (direct action or not) must be punished for it. They must be forced to reverse that decision, via Parliament or the Courts. 2/4

I’m so ashamed of this country. I harbour so much resentment for Keir Starmer. And I’m so embarrassed for Andy Burnham. Lift the proscription on Palestine Action & stop lying about genocide, Israel & terrorism.

Can’t wait to get stuck into Taj’s book, ‘Come What May, We’re Here to Stay’ (MUP). Then onto the People's Bookshop, for the first session of our new Political Education series, with lots of interesting & thoughtful discussion & some plans to move forward. More on that asap.

Because good old Andy - you know, the one who says he’s coming in to change politics, because “people haven’t been heard” and there is too much centralisation - has immediately signalled that he doesn’t respect party democracy. 6/7

It doesn’t just beg the question of whether he’d enact Labour conference decisions, it answers it very clearly. A different type of politics? I think not. 7/7

Apart from sanctioning Israel’s war crimes, I think one of the worst things about Starmer was his absolute disregard for democracy, both within the Labour Party and more widely, in his authoritarian support for a clampdown on protestors & the Palestinian solidarity movement. 2/7

And here we have Andy copying his homework. When Burnham says "I would call on the leadership of the Green Party to say that it will be reversed and it won’t be Green Party policy”, it could be Starmer or Blair speaking - no difference. 3/7

My own view, I think uncontroversial & no doubt shared by the vast majority of people on both sides of the Green Party vote, is that it is the Palestinian people who must decide their own future. 👇
