As someone whose friends were beheaded by ISIS, the comparisons between Nidal Hasan's public execution and ISIS propaganda are strange and unsettling to see. Many are on point, but the deeper implications of those parallels (and divergences) are much more disturbing than most of you recognize. 1/3

My professional expertise is political violence / strategic communication (eg, propaganda), so I'm sure I'll write something in the way of analysis. But the whole topic is so gross to me it will take some time to process the layers of personal / professional / political, so please be patient. 2/3

In any case, I can offer this much now: Even considering where we are currently, the days ahead somehow manage to be increasingly dark, ominous, and deeply shameful for us all. 3/3

I’ve never been the type to get emotional over military affairs, but — yesterday, I watched a woman drop off two babyfaced, uniformed Hispanic sailors at my apartment complex here in San Diego. 1/2

They’d been on the USS Lincoln, and had these half deflated Mylar “welcome home” balloons — they were so, so young. Everything about that scene — ICE, Iran, Trump’s bullshit comments, etc — just froze me for a moment, and utterly shredded my heart. 2/2
