Broadly, this resembles the Foreign Agents Registration Act in America, and the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme in Britain. Japan has laws on espionage, but not specific legislation addressing the activity of lobbyists, consultants etc.

Specifically, the Yomiuri piece names consultants, lobbyists, think tanks and advertising agencies. Prior registration will be required if, at the direction of overseas interests, you contact public officials, spread information affecting elections, or offer financial incentives.

I've only just learned that the Cheesecake Factory shops which used to be around in Japan, were never related to The Cheesecake Factory restaurant chain in America. The Japanese firm started as a single shop in Futakotamagawa in 1952.

The Cheesecake Factory US restaurant chain is, however, related to The Cheesecake Factory Bakery. Seijo Ishii and Costco Japan have both sold cheesecakes with this brand in recent years.

In Japan, The Cheesecake Factory Bakery isn't known for ostentatious packaging and displays, and nor are the homegrown Cheese Cake Factory brands, so they are all useless in explaining to my wife what Obama's recent Cheesecake Factory reference means.

Cheese Cake Factory and The Cheesecake Factory are both unrelated to Kiyosato Kogen Cheese Cake Factory, which was a cheesecake speciality store in Yamanashi, until it closed in 2019.

Cheese Cake Factory, The Cheesecake Factory, and Kiyosato Kogen Cheese Cake Factory are likewise unrelated to Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory (東京ミルクチーズ工場), which sells biscuits and a line of cheesecake.

The cheesecake was generally well-regarded. You don't last fifty years as a cake shop in Japan without some basis to your reputation. However, it seems the firm embarked on an unwise expansion, eventually going bust around 2007.

Cheese Cake Factory then moved online for a few years, selling its standard offerings, along with gimmicks like the shinkansen-themed cheesecake bars below. The site appears to have shut down in 2013.

Saw a "Japan" tablecloth online, and thought the illustration looked familiar. Remembered this photo of Walmart eco-bags, which were sold in Seiyu stores when the US firm owned them. Turns out it's a Shutterstock image Walmart used when fees on plastic shopping bags were introduced in 2020.

It's all in the last sentence. "ピクルスを漢数字の「八」に見立てて挟んでいる". The pickles are arranged to look like the kanji 八, from Hachiko's name.

Intriguing labelling choice here. In roman letters, "Nama Apple Danish" has one Japanese and two English words. Below, nama is in kanji, apple is translated to hiragana ringo, while danish is in hiragana, when it is usually written in katakana. Maybe I have too much free time.

The intake for food services has already hit its 50,000 visa limit, while food production is only at 76.3% of its 133,500 cap. This move means schools, hospitals and care homes can again recruit, without the need for the government to increase the overall limit of specified skill visas.

It is likely the food production category will hit its limit by 2028, so this is largely an exercise in kicking the can down the road. Similarly, the limit on care worker recruitment will be eased by shifting 20,000 spaces from the trainee status (育成就労) category.

Local supermarket has 440ml cans of Ohara Irish Stout Nitro on 40% discount. I've spent most of the day thinking about the best way to get a slab back home. Balancing it precariously in the front bicycle basket probably isn't ideal.

The 売り子 (uriko beer) girls get a commission on sales. It seems some men have started treating the girls like idols, and buy beer they don't want to help their numbers look better. As the video clip spread, DeNA Baystars confirmed it does not condone this kind of business.

Prawn and grilled chicken with mentaiko mayo. A lot of Japanese supermarket dishes can easily be found in a British counterpart these days. Others, like this one, not so much.
