Thanks @fairvote.bsky.social for elevating my piece in @thehill.com on how to and gerrymandering

FairVote@fairvote.bsky.social

The way to end the gerrymandering wars is to "give up our fixation on single-member districts and winner-takes-all elections, and use proportional representation." – @mulroyda.bsky.social, district attorney of Memphis & Shelby County, TN in @thehill.com

You may have seen that our office announced today that Ezekiel Kelly has entered a guilty plea for the September 7th, 2022 mass shooting that left three people dead and three others wounded. Kelly will serve 3 life sentences plus more than 200 additional years. #offendersaccountable #victimsrights

⚖️What is the difference between DISPOSITION and DEPOSITION? 🤔 These common legal terms sound similar but are nothing alike. However, they can be easy to confusion unless you hear them and use them on a regular basis. #legalterms #Memphis #publicsafety

Transparency. Accountability. Justice. See key data from the Shelby County DA’s Office, including: ✔️ Total convictions ✔️ Active V11 Fast Track Initiative cases ✔️ Prosecutor caseloads This is just a snapshot of the data that will soon be available to the public. #criminaljusticereform

🚨What’s the most important thing we can do to fight crime? 🚔 Cooperation from the public. But the public has to trust the system. Our office will be rolling out a data dashboard in the coming weeks. We are committed to transparency and improvement to make us safer. #publicsafety #transparency

⚖️What does precedent mean?⚖️ A follower asked that I define this word that we hear often in nationally significant court cases. However, even if we don't hear it, precedent is always quietly at play in local and state-level decisions. As the definition says, precedent is not ironclad.

🎒📚 Back to School Starts August 1st in Memphis-Shelby County Schools DA Steve Mulroy is sharing important safety reminders for parents and students as the new school year begins. Working together, we can keep our children safe — one smart decision at a time. #BackToSchool #SchoolSafety

Shelby County DA Steve Mulroy is championing the use of Rapid DNA technology to help law enforcement identify suspects faster and solve crimes more efficiently. ⚖️👮‍♀️ While not yet admissible in court, this cutting-edge tool gives investigators a critical head start. #RapidDNA #CrimeSolvingTech

We know legal jargon can be confusing. Victims, defendants, and t loved ones need to understand what is happening in the criminal justice process. Even if you’ve never come into direct contact with the system, you may at some point, and it helps to have a working knowledge of common legal terms.

Yesterday, I was joined by law enforcement to announce that a 3-judge panel ruled in favor of our office’s efforts to fight illegal gambling devices. Since summer of 2022, we have seized more than 268 machines, $1 million in cash, and found ties to firearms and suspected money laundering.

Here are some more thoughts about jury duty. Some people don’t mind so much showing up, but they don’t want to be seated. We often see jury selection depicted in media where a person expresses some issue with serving, and they’re dismissed. But in reality, it’s not that easy. #juryduty #Memphis

This is one of many data points we are continuously tracking. I look forward to sharing more with you through our Data Dashboard, which will be live soon. Our team in the DA's office is working every day - and getting results - to ensure criminals are held accountable. #DataDriven #publicsafety

Pleased to appoint Robert “Bobby” Zipp as Chief Data Officer. He comes to us from the Manhattan DA’s office. He will: Assess current data systems Identify areas for automation & efficiency Strengthen data collaboration across partners Build a culture where data is used proactively #memphis

Anytime a jury makes a decision deemed by some to be controversial, there are always questions about how the members of the jury were chosen. Let me know in the comments if there are other issues about the criminal justice process you want me to address. #jury #juryduty #Memphis

Here are a couple of notable cases from last week. Our team continues to prioritize violent crimes like these. I have also taken the opportunity to remind you about some of the important principles and nuances of our criminal justice system via the DA TIP section. #Justice #publicsafety #Memphis

At the risk of over-taxing your tea, you should know that shooting commercial-grade fireworks is illegal across Shelby County without a permit. This week is also one of the busiest for firefighters. Enjoy one of the free fireworks displays happening this week. #fireworks #Memphis

With a growing number of violent crimes being committed against elected and appointed officials across the country, it is important that incidents like these are taken seriously. Judge Bachelor is correct. This type of threat affects the safety of the whole community. #publicsafety #Memphis

Thanks to all of you who contacted commissioners and helped make this happen. In a landmark decision, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners voted on Monday to approve the first-ever locally funded crime lab in county history. We didn’t get everything but this is a great start’ #crimelab

Monday, June 23rd, the Shelby County Commission will vote on funding for a focused crime lab in Shelby County. We need your help. Please email your county commissioner and respectfully ask them to fund the lab so we can increase the solve rate of crimes and hold offenders accountable.

Two legal terms you are probably hearing more often are "Due Process" and "Habeas Corpus." These are foundational principles in the law that cannot be ignored. A failure to provide it has the potential to deny an innocent person their freedom or allow a guilty person to go free. #dueprocess

If you subscribe to the DA's updates, you may have read about these trial wins. If you would like to receive these weekly updates, click here: bit.ly/4e3wGTU Between these trials were dozens of critical proceedings—bond hearings, arraignments, motions—getting us closer to justice for victims.

“Clemency," "commute," and "pardon" have been in the news frequently, but some people confused. Clemency is the umbrella term for any act of mercy by the executive of a state or the country. Commutations, pardons, and exonerations are types of clemency that may be granted. #legalterms

Data is an important component of the work we do in the DA's office. We are always looking for ways data can enhance our trial arguments, increase efficiency, or hold us accountable. I thought you might find these latest numbers informative. #DataDriven #publicsafety #Memphis

Randy Johnson was found guilty in the murder of Jazmin Jones in 2023. Johnson shot Jones in her driveway and tampered with evidence. A digital forensic expert provided critical testimony about Johnson’s cell usage. This shows why Mayor Harris & I asked the Commission to fund a focused local lab.

A 19-year-old man tied to car thefts in Nashville and Memphis is being held on a $500K bond after our team argued he poses a continued threat to public safety. Bryun Watkins is charged with theft of property over $60K and vandalism after police say he stole a RAM TRX truck from Memphis on May 9.

Today, I joined Mayor Lee Harris in asking the Shelby County Commission to provide $5.5 million in recurring funding for a focused crime lab. I want to thank Mayor Harris for his support and the County Commission for their interest in the facility. #forensictesting #rapidDNA #PublicSafety #Memphis

Sentence is one of many legal terms important to understand and essential for making us safer. Over the next months, I will be explaining some of the terms you hear on the news. If you have a term you want me to define, leave it in the comments. #legalterms #criminaljustice #publicsafety #Memphis

Last week, prosecutors from our Special Victims Unit put another sexual predator behind bars for a very long time. Because of the overwhelming evidence we were prepared to present against him, Eugene Jackson pled guilty and will serve 100% of 40 years. #PublicSafety #OffendersAccountable #Memphis

I hope you will pause with me this Memorial Day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedoms - freedoms still worth fighting for. Thank you to all those who served. #MemorialDay2025 #FreedomIsNeverFree #rememberthefallen

The DOJ’s decision wasn’t based on a conclusion that Memphis, specifically, lacks problems needing correction, but rather a regrettable wholesale rejection of civil rights investigation and oversight of police practices around the country. That’s not something we should celebrate… #DOJ

There has been a lot of conversation over the last few days since the FBI Director called Memphis the "homicide capital of America." Violent crime in Memphis is unacceptably high. However, the trend continues downward. We still have a lot of work to do so we can all feel safer. #publicsafety

#ICYMI Here are 3 recent cases that are just a sampling of the significant work our team in the DA's office is doing. Day in and day out, we continue to do the job of prosecutors despite the rhetoric and the bad news in your social feeds, we are making a difference. #publicsafety

Today, Paul Young, Chief Davis, Rep. Antonio Parkinson, and I gathered to announce that Infiniti Sports Bar in Frayser has been deemed a public nuisance and closed. This was the site of a mass shooting last week-2 dead, 3 injured - and the location of the first homicide of 2025. #publicsafety

We’re disappointed in the verdict. We believed the evidence supported the charges and pursued this case in the interest of justice and accountability. Tyre should be alive today. His death was a preventable tragedy that devastated his family & deeply affected our community.

No matter what you call it - #MayDay #LabourDay #InternationalWorkersDay - they're about doing what’s right for laborers - the backbone of our society. Workers deserve: 💰Fair wages ✊The right to organize 🧰Good working conditions 🧯Safety on the job 🤒Quality healthcare ⏰Reasonable hours ...and more.

We continue to prioritize the prosecution of violent crime. We are dogged in our determination. A case in point is that of Anterious Miles. We pursued it relentlessly and a jury convicted him of 2 counts of murder. Grateful for the ADAs & staff who brought him to justice. #publicsafety #Memphis

For nearly a year, I have been battling to stop an effort to remove me from office. Yesterday, the legislature adjourned without a vote to remove or investigate me! The truth won, and it wouldn't have been possible without YOU! Thank you for standing by me. #truthwins #Memphis #publicsafety

Sen. Taylor has been working like a one-legged cat in a sandbox to remove me from office. He passed a res. Asking the Sup. Court to create another unneccessary bureaucratic process to investigate DAs. It’s time to work together. If he can't see that, then he's as lost as last year's Easter egg.

ADA Rob Steele, successfully argued for a higher bond in the case against Bernice Jarrett, the caregiver accused of neglecting six vulnerable adults—one of whom died. How a community advocates for its most vulnerable citizens speaks volumes about that community's values. #vulnerableadults #Memphis

I filed a temporary injunction & restraining order declaring Fast Check at 4580 Winchester Road, a public nuisance. Feb. ‘23 to Feb. ‘25, Police responded to 515 calls including robberies, carjackings, agg. assaults, drug & weapons violations, and murder. #offendersaccountable #Memphis

In recognition of #NationalCrimeVictimsRightsWeek, I thought it was important to repost these crime victims' rights guaranteed in the Tennessee Constitution. #victimsrights #offendersaccountable #Memphis

In recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office will host a solemn yet powerful tribute to those affected by violent crime in our community. #NationalCrimeVictimsRightsWeek #memphis

April 4, 1968—A day that shook the world. 57 years later, we still carry Dr. King’s dream in our hearts and fight for the justice he gave his life for. 🕊️ His words still guide us, his vision still inspires us, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. #MLK #HonorTheDream #KeepMovingForward

We are grateful that the grand jury has indicted Jackson Hopper for first-degree murder in the death Ellie Young on October 19th at Shelby Farms. There’s much more to do to achieve justice for Ellie Young and her family, but this is an important step in the process. #justice #publicsafety #Memphis

April is #sexualassaultawarenessmonth. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has ways you can support survivors, educate your community, and keep pressure on policymakers. In Shelby County, the Crime Victims & Rape Crisis Center maintains a 24-hour hotline. #publicsafety #Memphis
